If they want an average-looking character, they should hire an average-looking model, not virtue signal over how they made an attractive woman less attractive.

So, here's the thing. There's no virtue signaling. The arguments that they "made her ugly" are disingenuous. The motion capture that they use for the character model is capturing the shape of her face, not the contour of her makeup. They use that system to record her talking and moving around. Which helps them translate those movements directly into the game.

No, I was being snarky. I'm saying that without makeup, she looks a lot closer to her in-game model. Because the goal is to recreate her face shape, not every single detail. Which is why I posted the screenshot of her in the motion capture suit. There are limitations with mocap, but it's more on how accurately it captures subtle facial expressions.

It was the same problem with Aloy in Horizon. People were calling her ugly compared to her face model, but the only thing really missing from Aloy's face was makeup. Like there was a mod to make her "hot" and literally all it did was add makeup. Didn't change the face shape or anything else.

Given other devs have managed to perfectly facial capture their actors just fine, both the highly attractive and not so attractive ones, I find the notion that this one case is somehow an exception and that the computer WASN'T able to perfectly recreate the model's face to be somewhat dubious. And it is most definitely possible to alter the scan after the fact. It's not hard at all, actually. Automatic recontexturing and remodeling techniques were available before AIs were a thing. They're even better now.

Combine that with the fact multiple companies like MS have recently issued mission statements to their development teams to the effect of "advising" their female characters be designed to be more average and less curvy, and I find the suggestion that this likely wasn't a deliberate design decision to be rather amusing.

What exception? These people have been bitching about western games' female character design being purposefully made ugly for years now. And always they post pictures where the model is caked in makeup as their "proof"

I have never seen you post Aloy screenshots.

Judging from the youtube video posted later, looks like to me they removed some fat from the actress's cheeks, which has the effect of making her cleft chin, a masculine feature, that much more prominent. So a domino effect at play even though the initial change can potentially be attractive to both men and women. That is not helped by the game's lighting either.

Which is usually how this goes down. For example, Aloy from Horizon. She looks great but people like to use very specific pictures of her that are not flattering and then act like that's how she always looks. Or they just use a blatantly false image.

It's a very tiresome method of whining.
