So if you're going to build a HTPC or build a gaming PC and connect it to your TV, you may want to consider Windows for those reasons, though I think a Linux PC connected to the TV with DisplayPort and a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter will do high refresh rates just fine if memory serves.
I never could get connecting to my TV to look right

tried Xfce and KDE, Nvidia and AMD, X11 and Wayland, HDMI then tried a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter

nothing worked right, everything was either choppy, had screen tearing, or something was messed up with the resolution

so I just use Windows whenever I want to hook my laptop up to my TV

I think 4K / 60 should be OK if your HDMI version supports it. My understanding is that the higher refresh rates in 2.1 wont work in Linux. There was a recent effort to fix it the consortium shot down.

Nah, this is just a basic Walmart HDMI cable from many years ago

it could even just be LG not playing nice with their TV software

I more meant the ports. The newest HDMI version is 2.1. 4K / 60 4:4:4 wasnt possible until 2.0. 1.4 was limited to 30 FPS at 4:4:4 and only supported 60 FPS at 4:2:0 if memory serves.

As far as I know, a cable is a cable.
