Usually when people think of amazing acting its these characters that absolutely swing for the fucking fences in every scene, but what are some examples where theyre more subdued but still captivating?

I submit Warden Norton from Shawshank, dude managed to be terrifying in this scene despite his calm and reserved demeanor. Every little inflection in his expressions and tone are perfect.

Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders. He could convey so much saying so little, or just with a look.

Well I mean, aside from the last scene but otherwise I agree. Masterpiece movie and performance.

The last scene and the church scene are the exceptions, but I'm assuming anyone familiar with the film already knew that.

The dude giancarlo esposito playing as gus in breaking bad. Man walks in the room, changes clothes, has the protagonist rambling for his life, slits a guy's throat while making intense eye contact, and then he leaves just as calmly as he came in the room......never saying a single word the entire time. The message he wanted sent got sent, lol.

Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell at the end of The Grapes of Wrath.

Look at the intensity in Henry's eyes. You feel like he is really seeing a vision in his mind. You can see it straight through his eyes into his mind.

Look at Jane Darwell's expressions at 45 seconds. The confusion and motherly concern she is expresses without a word for her son as he explains why he is leaving.

No special actions. Just close camera. Black and white. No music no action. One of the greatest scenes ever.
