Was watching one for OoT and less than 5 minutes in, the guy is basically describing everything in the opening cutscenes, then every step you take as Link through the whole kokiri forest. The whole video may not be that way, but I'm not finding out. My first impressions of your video should be that you're going to tell me what you think of the game, not that I'm just going to sit through a retelling of the story for a game I've beaten many many times already.

There's a popular YouTuber whose reviews are just that. Describing every step of the game while throwing in one analysis comment every five minutes.

Any way you could figure out who it is? I'd like to see if I've tried to watch any videos by them.

This is actually my favorite type of review, but it has to be done right. Not just taking me on your journey, but tying it into you talking about the mechanics and skipping over the less important parts. Maybe giving some background in between. I think what game it is can change how interesting it is too.

I think Majuular does a great job walking you through the game while discussing background and mechanics along the way. Here is his big video on King's Field. His Ultima videos, Yakuza 5, 3DO RPGs video, etc are all cool too though.

Oh yeah this guy is good. I watched this months ago and he made a pretty forgotten game seem pretty interesting,

I've watched some videos like this and they're pretty decent. It's a nice way to get some info on a game that is historically significant or interesting, but not something I would really want or be able to play. Of course, I watch some of those and youtube starts recommending crap like the TC, where it's like a combination of some guy reading a wikipedia article and a Gamefaqs walkthrough. "Wow, a retrospective on my favorite RPG? Maybe there's some interesting developer history I don't know about, or some insightful commentary on the story. Oh, it's just a guy describing every story event while a Let's Play video is on in the background."

I dunno what everyone else on the Internet is using reviews for that make this make sense, but if I'm trying to decide whether to play a game, why would I want spoilers?

It's more prevalent in Retrospective reviews, which most people watch when they've finished the game. Usually the creator warns near the beginning of the video there will be massive spoilers.

It's to the point where Google actually tries to find the answer you're looking for for you.

Like literally, not just search the internet, but the results of that search.

It's stupid af and whoever is making this make sense needs to change it. Like, who is sorting results based on word count or duration or whatever and how do we get them to stop?

I do too. Written reviews generally tend to be faster and give you a run down of everything better.

I appreciate the visual element in a video review, but most of the time enough of the gameplay isn't shown enough to really give you a clear picture of the mechanics without already being intimate with the systems.

I agree actually. ShayMay makes some excellent offensively long videos where he's talking you through a Pokmon play through. But that serves as a background for the discussion, and not the meat of the discussion itself.

Another example of this done in a way I dislike is the guy that does super long Elder Scrolls reviews. A lot of it is just him giving shallow descriptions of the setting or quests then bitching about skyrim. Also the YouTuber I referenced previously was spherehunter. Her resident evil reviews were so disappointing.

agreed, i find it worthless

noah caldwell does some great reviews wherein he discusses the game as it goes. he doesnt summarize the whole fuckin thing, he'll pick pieces out to discuss at length. very astute and articulate guy, i really appreciate him

I like them quite a bit. So, we are just to have to disagree there. I'm looking up this ShayMay person. Is their channel called shoogles? I looked them up and saw an 11 hour video on Pokemon Brilliant Diamond.

One thing I tend to dislike is when a video isn't concise and repeats itself a lot. You can have a long video, but it has to keep moving along. I was watching a channel that reviewed all the Ratchet and Clank games. I know they work hard on their videos, but I couldn't get into them. They just kept repeating the same thing over and over again. The video could be half the length if they had an editor come and clean things up.

That sounds like Josh Strife.

His aren't so bad because many of the games are super obscure, and if you haven't played them (many people today), then you miss out on a lot.

But his videos are not so much reviews as they are a trip down memory lane.

Oh, and this as well. I don't watch videos to see if I want to play a game or not. I usually know. I'm just watching them for entertainment. If at any point in the video I realize I want to play it, I just stop the video.

To be fair, this is becoming more and more of a thing because the game is pretty old now. It's like expecting someone to know about something like the original Mario Bros. Game. Legend of Zelda is popular, but there are legitimate teenagers and young adults that may have had breath of the wild as their first and only exposure to Zelda.

I would pad out an Ocarina of Time review by talking about Volvagia's recent film career; how he costarred in Godzilla x Kong as Tiamat and Ghostbusters IV as the Hell's Kitchen Sewer Dragon.

Eh, Mario Bros is a bad example. Maybe something more like Pitfall or Super Mario Bros, where the only way to not know about it is pretty much to not know about the system at all.
