From my experience, endings can often feel tough to land. Sometimes they can just be 'fine', sometimes they're kinda bad, but not harmful either, and I've even seen endings that pretty much completely flip how people feel about a story retrospectively.

But are there any endings that were very narratively satisfying to you? Maybe it felt like the whole series was building up to it, and it was executed perfectly.

I know you're looking for longer media/series, but the ending of the movie Forgotten (2017) stood out to me. It's one of those incredible drama/thriller plots where the narrative pieces connect in a way you wouldn't expect.

Oh I don't actually mind if it's just a standalone thing, I'm down for people to bring up anything.

Imagine Harry Potter but a little less kiddy/tweeny. Still categorised as YAF, but more on the mature side.

Mistborn Era 1. The chapter intro's throughout all three books were always neat in how they tied into big reveals, but The Hero of Ages one just made the whole trilogy fantastic for me in regards to the ending. It probably helps that my favorite character in it had a huge part in the third book in particular. It's not my favorite Brandon Sanderson book but it's probably my favorite ending in the Cosmere next to Yumi and the Nightmare Painter.

I appreciate all these examples. I remember trying FFT (WOTL) on a tablet, and I dropped it, but it may just be I never got a good chance to get into it. FF9 is a 'someday', as is TLOU. I've read books 1-3 of Sanderson's Stormlight, and while Oathbringer turned me off, I've always heard good things of Mistborn.

I guess I should give an example. A recent one for me is Dungeon Meshi. It's a manga, but currently has an anime running. The whole story feels really well put together, and the ending doesn't disappoint at all. I often hear the opinion that manga have bad endings, usually because of the schedule, but this didn't suffer from that at all.

Imho a great ending is either an ending that makes your subsequent rewatch hit different (ex: The Sixth Sense) or an ending that stays with you (ex: The Thing).

The House in Fata Morgana. I'm a massive advocate of that game in general, but I think its ending was absolutely wonderful all around.

Yeah, I mentioned in the OP how an ending can change how you feel about something in retrospect as a negative, but it can definitely be a positive.

Did you finish Oathbringer or did you stop reading Stormlight right there? Because I actually took a break from the series for a year while I was reading it, and then it ended up being both my favorite Sanderson and Stormlight Archive book.

Six Feet Under was not just a great series but had an excellent ending in my opinion. It was refreshing to have a great show actually end in a quality way.

I finished Oathbringer. I didnt find the other dimension. very interesting. And Shallans whole thing really bugged me, and from what I heard, it continues in the next book. And I just had no motivation to read it after hearing that.

Community (The TV Show). Couldn't really ask for a better ending. They were able to do the usual Community meta commentary (this time on finales) while also keeping it interesting and sincere.

Octopath Traveler 2. It's really cliche but its so genuine that it works perfectly.

1984 - Not the narrative ending. There is an appendix in the back of the book that talks about Newspeak. It talks about it in the past sense which highly implies that regime from the book does eventually fall.

There is another thing I forgot to mention about Octopath Traveler 2 that I loved. You fight the final boss with all 8 party members instead of the regular party which limits you to 4.

Hope its as good for you as it was for me.

Interested to hear if people have any others. I do appreciate that even though I marked the topic for spoilers, people have mostly kept it spoiler-free. Its just inherently a spoilery question, so I didnt wanna force people to be too vague if they didnt want to
