Thinking of visiting while I explore potential places to relocate to but I only know what I've seen on Family Guy.

Which state should I visit first? Are there any I should avoid? I'm from Texas and would rather not go somewhere else awful.

I would also prefer to visit somewhere walkable and with decent public transportation. Natural beauty is also important. I love to hike and spend time outdoors.

We went to Massachusetts for our honeymoon. Stayed in Ipswich, visited Salem during Halloween, hit up Cape Cod and went to Pebble Beach and Hammonds Castle. Were trying to move there permanently. Absolutely love the area and how clean it is and how aggressive and nice the people are.

Lots of good vacation spots

Southern Maine Coast (one I know the most)
Cape Cod
Acadia/Bar Harbor
Islands (Block Island/Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket)
White Mountains
Lake Winnepesauke Region in NH
Stowe, Vermont
Newport, RI

For cities, obviously Boston. Casinos in CT are popular, though I doubt people visit from other parts of the country just to see them.

Thanks everyone.

Could I have a good Boston and Providence trip in a weekend? Or should I plan for a few more days?

I don't see why you would bother.
Boston is a fun enough day trip town alone.

I could never handle a place that cold especially moving from a warm place like Texas. Not as warm as sunny Miami but way more tolerable than a region that literally has "England" in the name *shudder*

Okay, so the plan is Boston in September or October.

And Dallas weather is meh. The only guarantees are a scorching summer and every other season being erratic. I honestly hate the cold but these summers are getting to be too much and we have just enough winter for me to still be miserable anyway. Several months of actual winter and much milder summers just seems like a different kind of hell, not a worse one.

The North East is fucking brutal at times.
Yes, it has it's good moments, but you do pay for them.
You will see every extreme.

That's how it is here too though. I don't think it's comparatively a paradise or anything but I'm up for anywhere that doesn't have like three straight months around 100F. Like I said, they just seem like different kinds of hell.

That's possible. But think of nearly or more then 6 months of 17 to 35 degree weather, with some ligit -degree Temps scattered in and effectively no sun. And then turning around from that to all sorts of high temps and cracy humidity, and a shit ton of bugs.

You really do have to be ready for everything.

I've been looking through temperatures for the last few summers in various places in New England and I haven't seen anything close to what we get down here, not in severity or duration. I've actually gotten pretty heat tolerant in recent years and I have little issue spending time outside up to 100F, even when it's humid, so those summer highs in the 90s still look great to me. I had mosquitos in my house in January, so bugs aren't much of a deterrent either <_<

The cooler months there are infinitely less appealing but that tradeoff is still an interesting prospect that I want to experience for myself. I know I could be absolutely wrong and hate it but I hate it here too so

Oh I do love New England. Don't get me wrong, but you have to be rather hardy to make it though the tougher months....or just a crazy skier.

I've spent many of days in Vermont and it is as charming as it is made out to be. Not without issues, but the ideal isn't a fake vibe.
I am in New York, but I only live like an hour from Arlington, where Norman Rockwell did some of his work.

I think that's what's so interesting for me about relocating somewhere with real winter. We've definitely had bad winters but most of that is because we don't have the infrastructure for it. A week or two of cold weather with maybe some snow (or ice, more likely) and everything goes to hell. We may get that two or three times a winter, broken up by boring cold weather or decent days.

I don't even have a proper winter jacket because a hoodie with a long sleeved shirt underneath will work just fine most of the time, even with my distaste for the cold. If it's colder than that, I just don't go out because there's nothing to do anyway. I want to go somewhere that requires the art of layering. I want to go somewhere that doesn't freak out because there is a possibility of snow. I know blizzards and all that can be brutal and I'm not trying to romanticize it but it is part of the appeal. I want that experience, you know?

Vermont looks incredible. I might spend a couple of weeks in New England because it seems difficult to pick one place to go.

Oh, a Hoodie will not cut it in the cold months.
You think you want the experience, but it can be a bitch and half at some point.
We get all of the worst air from Canada.

Also, just FYI driving North and South in Vermont is much different than driving East and West.
The joke is, "In Vermont, you can't get there from here"

I still love it though. Coming from even Upstate NY you can feel your heart rate drop the moment you cross state line.
