I mean

I hear you

But 9 is not really the game to apply this criticism to. Not with that final dungeon. I don't remember how it works exactly but something about going into your own memories and for some reason when they get deep enough into it, they arrive at the heart of the universe or some nonsense.

I dunno, it didn't really make sense to me so I just said sure and kept scrolling dialog.

Memoria is a little high concept, but nothing as wacky as the dumb ass time ghost stuff from FF7R. It also happens literally at the very end of FFIX whereas that game attempts to shove the wacky stuff in your face as much as possible.

The things that make IX a mediocre or even bad game all happen in the latter part of Disc 3/all of Disc 4. So yeah, that tracks.

Really? Regardless of sales, I've only heard positive things from other people about IX, while VIII--despite selling more copies--is just a big, giant, "meh", if not outright hostility.

I think it's largely an internet thing. 9 is the game that played it safe with tried-and-true medieval setting and mechanics, and didn't take a lot of crazy risks with its design or narrative. It didn't reach the emotional / creative heights of some of the other games in the series imo, but it didn't have as many glaring flaws either. Therefore it became the darling of the late 00's / 2010's internet because, due to the rising flood of trolls, shitposters and all-around negativity, you didn't have to put as much effort into defending it as opposed to the other games in the series.

Funnily enough, I was talking to a buddy from work earlier this week about the FF series, and he loved 8 and hated 9; I actually found myself (slightly) coming to 9's defense for the first time in years.

I love 8 and find 9 really bland.

I don't hate 9, just... there's not a lot to it that's of particular interest.

Personally, when I was younger I played 7, 8 and X to death; but only played 9 twice. (Mind you, I also didn't play 7 much anymore once I had 8 and X.) It was definitely good, but just didn't have the same appeal to keep coming back.

And in further fairness, for X it was very much the gameplay that carried it to that extent for me. The huge variety of challenge runs that are possible on that game is what I mostly kept going back for.

FFIX has a much stronger emotional core to it than any other game in the series by a large amount, certainly leaps and bounds beyond 7 or 8. The main flaws with the game are in the battle system

Core's fine, but the big moments like 'You're Not Alone' fell very flat for me, and were carried exclusively on soundtrack.

I know a lot of people love 9 for its story (particularly Vivi), but outside of a couple moments it never really stirred me in this regard the way the other games did.

I've heard a ton of negative things about FF9. Its got a good story but the minigames and gameplay are all slow and dumpy compared to 5 - 8 and 10. Its the one I would legit least like to play in its original form.

I'm still waiting on the FF9 anime
It's pretty much Disney. Dashing Hero, Princess, comedic characters, a character who has growth. One of the Villians is very Ursula like. Eiko is for the kiddos to say she's like me. Yeah it has Disney written all over it.
