The flag with a circle of many less stars stood for slavery(among other things)

But the flag with fifty stars never stood for slavery;
It stands for freedom.

The Flag was created in The Bennigton Vermont area. Vermont was not an area know for slavery.

If anything The South couldn't come up with anything better and just adopted it.
