I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

If you asked me before this contest began to name the generation I was most confident would win its day's typing, I would've told you Gen I for Fire, and I was not wrong. While several generations have seen 30-vote totals, Gen I Fire proved the strongest percentage thus far. Surprisingly though, Gen V managed to avoid a doubling, giving it was of the strongest place showings as well. Those two were really the only generations of relevance when it came to Fire, it seems.

For today's contest, we're doing Flying-types. I knew there were going to be a lot of these, but holy shit there were a lot of Pokemon to list in their respective poll options. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Fire: Gen I (30 Votes, 47.62%)
Bug: Gen V (30 Votes, 44.12%)
Dragon Gen III (30 Votes, 41.67%)
Fairy: Gen VII (24 Votes, 39.34%)
Electric: Gen I (24 Votes, 37.50%)
Dark: Gen II (18 Votes, 26.87%)
Fighting: Gen IV (14 Votes, 21.88%)

I'm not gonna break down the generations this time. I don't mean to come across as a genwunner, but given the sheer number of entries for each generation, Gen I just has the most quality Pokemon without filling many (if any) slots with trash. Even Generations with higher highs have much lower lows, and usually more of them than even the worst of Gen I (which is Golbat, by the way).

Gen 3. I just have too much nostalgia for them even if they're not really that good.

Giving it to Gen VIII here because Rookidee is the only non-legendary flying type without a secondary typing. And that line is awesome. Even if it later becomes flying/steel, which is still a pretty cool typing, and looks awesome to boot. Plus the galarian bird trio is pretty cool. And Cramorant is hilarious.

This is really down to Gen I and IV here. Gyarados, Zapdos, Articuno, Aerodactyl, Butterfree, and Dragonite vs Staraptor, Gliscor, Honchkrow, Togekiss, Yanmega, Vespiquen, and Mothim... Okay actually IV wins that one pretty easily.

My love for Gen V does not extend to most of its Flying types. I like the Woobat line a lot, and Sigilyph, and Emolga are good too, but not super great.

I didn't realize just how much recent generations have been slacking on new Flying types. I thought IX had more for sure, but I guess I was tricked by how many non-Flying birds it has.

Also Mega Pidgeot is missing.

I briefly toyed with the idea of casting my ballot for VIII despite the hideous genie holding it back because I mean look at that lineup, but then I realized Gen VI has literally no weaknesses. None. Everyone solid. I, II, and IV, have some heavy hitters for sure, but also a lot of unnecessary or repetitive bloat.

Gen IV's final evolutions are strong and Gen I has some classics, but I went with Gen VI. Excellent lineup there

Oh man I think Flying has the most Pokemon I like. Almost every generation is stacked. This is going to be a very tough ranking!

9. Gen VII
Toucannon is amazing and I like Rowlet a lot, but I'm not a fan of Datrix. Don't really care for Oricorio or Minior, and Celesteela sucks. Having Decidueye in the lineup would help a lot. I feel terrible putting a generation with Toucannon this low, but the rest are just so stacked, except for IX.

8. Gen IX
Nothing I dislike here, but nothing really amazing either. Very solid but lacks depth.

7. Gen VIII
The Corviknight line and Cramorant are great, but Enamorus really really sucks. The Kanto birds and Braviary are cool, but I give more weight to completely new Pokemon over regional variants.

6. Gen IV
Really love Gliscor and I'm also a big fan of Driftblim and Honchkrow, but overall it falls a little short compared to the competition. Also, it's a little bloated with stuff I don't care about like Togekiss and Mothim.

5. Gen III
Swellow might just be my favorite early bird line, and I love Ninjask. Some good dragons too with Altaria, Salamence, and Rayquaza. Masquerain is very forgettable and Pelipper is really annoying to fight, but no real weak links here.

4. Gen V
Sigilyph, Swanna, Unfezant (male), Braviary, and Emolga are all fantastic, but this generation does get dragged down by the vultures and the genies. Also don't care for Swoobat much.

3. Gen II
Great lineup here with Ledian, Xatu, Skiploom (Jumpluff is a downgrade tbh), Murkrow, Gligar, Delibird, Mantine, Skarmory, and the Legendaries. I pretty much like everything here, even if it doesn't have a lot of top tier Pokemon.

2. Gen I
Call me basic but Charizard rocks. Solid early bird line, Scyther is awesome, Gyarados is cool, the legendaries are classic and Dragonite is pretty great. Zubat is one of the most annoying Pokemon in the games, Aerodactyl sucks, and there's some filler like the Doduo and Spearow lines that we didn't really need.

1. Gen VI
Hawlucha is top tier, there's a Charizard, Noivern is awesome, Talonflame line is fine and Vivillon is interesting, at least. Even Yvetal isn't half bad! I don't care for some of the Megas, but Rayquaza is cool. Also, it's missing from the list but I like Mega Pidgeot a lot.

Realistically its Gen 1. Thats a massive list of good quality Pokemon.

That said, I voted Gen 4. I couldnt resist Staraptor/Chatot/Skymin/Drifblim combo.
