I don't really think she is either. She isn't goofy enough to be like Cloud and isn't an anxious socially awkward misfit like Squall.

She's more of a female Auron is the best one I can think of

Squall and Lightning isn't even a good comparison. Squall's issue and character is that he's afraid of losing others mixed with some childhood drama. That's why he intentionally tries to keep himself distant from everyone.

She's way too hot blooded to be Auron.

There's a specific scene in DFFOO where she walks into a conversation between Selphie and Serah and at least in that scene she's definitely Squall. Let me see if I can find it.

A remake with Lightning Returns' battle system would make more sense. It has the same job classes as XIII and XIII-2, but as Garbs with the class names removed.

Personally I thought Lightning was fine. But it is kinda obvious Square-Enix expected her character and franchise to be more popular.

But I can say that about literally most of Square-Enix's stuff from the last decade. Especially relating to Final Fantasy.

FF13 was expected to be a bigger franchise than it originally was. FF13 was the cocoon side of things, vs13 was supposed to be protagonists from Pulse but that never happened. Agito was intended to be some kind of bridge between the two but the devs didn't get the memo so l'cie ended up being something totally different and then they had to change everything and the whole original plan for the three games fell apart. And then vs13 never came out.

And no 15 isn't just a rebrand. The original vs13 was a completely different story centered around some girl named Stella who didn't even appear in 15 despite being in multiple vs13 promos. By the time 15 was released it was a completely different game.

And Squall's "Whatever" was a localization thing. In Japanese, there were phrases like "Sorry." and "Leave me be.".

Lightning had the problem of coming across as a bitch sometimes instead of being a strong female leader. Game devs always go too heavy on some character traits and they end up making ridiculous characters who are too unrealistic or too unlikeable.
