Outside of the encounter rate I found it decent.

Lufia 1 Is dated but still solid
It's only real issues are it's extreme encounter rate and that it's the last jrpg released to do that annoying thing where if an enemy dies when a character whose targeting it hasn't attacked yet that party member loses their turn

Auto retargetting was a godsend

Overall lufia is just overshadowed by lufia 2 which is objectively better in every way
But on a subjective level I like lufia 1 more

Lufia 3 is also really good
But lufia 4 is pure garbage and is best ignored

It's extremely old school in mechanics but I still quite enjoy the game. It's no Lufia II of course but few games are.

I somehow remember BofF 2 & Beyond the Beyond being the kings of atrocious encounter rates, more so than Lufia 1. But maybe thats just me.

I had fun with it

Lufia had a worse encounter rate than Breath of Fire 2. Now between Lufia and Beyond the Beyond? That's a tough one to answer.

I do know Suikoden IV while travelling on the world map in your ship takes the cake though.

I WAS JUST PLAYING THIS

lol at one point I was just like man, I wonder if this game is known for its encounter rate?

and weirdly enough, I have an ongoing playthrough of BoF1 topic somewheres

I am absolutely sure Lufia 1 has a worse encounter rate in terms of BoF1 at least.. theyre almost much neck and neck, but Lufia, to me, takes the cake here

Im talking like I take two steps after I just completed an encounter (having previously taken three steps to enter an encounter levels of encounter rate)

the whole auto miss an enemy if youve cleared the group thing is pretty annoying too.. but I found that it at least adds an element of strategy to whether I decide to use a group hitting item or magic spell that hits everything

anyways,
Im really digging it.. there are more scripted sequences here and a non-silent protagonist (even with simple dialogue) and your party members putting in their thoughts to a given matter is very welcome

ive been playing many older titles lately and Lufia 1 is a breath of fresh air in that regard

but I havent checked out the release dates either so theres that
Oh yeah, BoF1s wasnt that bad from what I recall. 2 though, ugh.

But yeah, I just must not remember Lufias that much. It was pretty early on in the SNES lifespan, and there werent exactly ton of RPG options at that time. Like I said, I had fun, but Id probably have a hell of a time getting back into it if I tried it now.

One of the only times I've ever cheated (and that includes using in-built cheats) was to turn off the encounter rate in that game with a GameShark. The encounter rate in that game was miserable.

I maintain that Suikoden IV is actually good but you're required to use a game shark and use the joker code to make it so as long as you hold a certain button the encounter rate is 0.

Eh, I dunno if I would call it good even with it. It was the only Suikoden that I really just couldn't get into (including the DS game). Still, it wasn't terrible or anything outside of the encounter rate. It was just painfully bleh otherwise.

It had an interesting true rune, gave us more information into the nature of true runes and gave us excellent Ted back story. As a Suikoden fanboy? That's enough to get me to say it's good once you fix the broken ass garbage encounter rate.
