the only way he'd be cooler in the nibelheim flashback fmv would be if he were also smoking a cigarette

I feel like "cool guy" as a concept went out the window right around that time, or shortly thereafter.

It's certainly what they were shooting for, with the all black clothing, the full composure at all times, I mean, he's late 90's edge personified.

But they also kinda made the game inadvertently goofy in general, which kinda undermines the intent. Like in certain scenes, the way he walks around looks like he's wading through knee deep water for no reason, while in other scenes he's basically resorting to peer pressure while Cloud proudly reveals that he doesn't know what a reunion is. And then the part where he throws a materia at Cloud, I don't know why that cracks me up, but it does.
