For the purpose of the poll:

1.) Turn based = the monster will wait while you're busy making your choice.
2.) Active Time Battle = the monster can and will attack you while you're busy making your choice.
3.) Real time = you whack the monster in real time until it stops moving.

I prefer real time these days, though I loved turn based back in the day and still enjoy them, just not like I used to.

Where's the combo real time/turn based (FFVIIR)?

In my book if it aint turn based, it aint an RPG. Im not knocking the quality of the action games, theyre often amazingly made, but to me being turn based is what makes RPGs a unique and special experience.

Turn based. I don't want to be penalized for interfacing with menus. I set my preferences to "wait" when ATB is an option (a la FF6).

that said, imo, FFX is ATB as stuff like Lancet and Quick hit account for dynamic turn order, which is awesome. FF1, Persona, and Dragon Quest games are fully turn based, imo.

Turn based and real time are both fun. ATB is terrible and should never be used again.

ATB is great when done well. FF13 and 13-2 have the best atb combat in the franchise imo. But my favorite atb system overall is in Grandia.

Some of my favorite JRPGs are real time, but I actually think I generally prefer the ATB style. It feels more engaging than pure turn-based, but I don't feel as pressured as I do with real time.

Though, in retrospect, I probably should've voted turn-based. My top pick would probably be something like Trails in the Sky or Honkai Star Rail, where it's strictly turn-based but there are scenarios where you can basically force a free turn. The problem there is that it's still strictly turn-based, which always gets stale after awhile. Trails circumvents it a little by making battlefield positioning also matter, but I haven't played many games that do the same without going full-on SRPG.

Turn-based. Even though FF6 is my all-time favorite game, I've always had a certain disdain for ATB as a worst-of-both-worlds mechanic, and always choose 'Wait' when available.

This so much.

Also, auto attack should be in this poll.

My first love was always turn based because when I got hooked on the genre that was the overwhelming design of the time and its what I still love the most.

idk wtf adb is an acronym for but 12 was prolly the best battle system in the (offline) series imo
if they didnt gate gambits behind progression and more finely tuned spontaneous ability activation, id be fuckin stoked

Uhm my option is probably a bit weird, but

Turn based OR Real Time. Pick a side.

Im not a big fan of ATB, id rather they pick a side and stick to it. If they do that i dont have any strong feelings either way

For reference despite having ATB i dont consider FF7 Remake and Rebirth to be in the same group as like FF13 for example... well that or its an actual hybrid system, because whilst the game timer doesnt fully stop when navigating menus, the slowdown is big enough that it might as well be stopped.

Mass Effect is similar actually, though it does pause fully when selecting powers.
