A few listens of Fly By Night on repeat were what really sold me on them as a group I wanted to listen to a lot more of, and by the time I backtracked to 2112 and Caress of Steel, I was solidly on the bandwagon.

It's definitely an acquired taste that's developed through exposure, though, and a ton of people aren't going to have the endurance for getting to that place.
STG, the first time I heard the intro to "Working Man" (before Geddy began singing), the timbre of the instruments, the way it's mixed...I thought it was Sabbath.

If you want technical proficiency, go play some Dragonforce or some kind of speed metal.

It's technically unlistenable, but it's technically proficient.
