Rarity is what makes something valuable, and if everyone collects everything then it's not rare and thus no longer valuable.

The value of collectibles can certainly be arbitrary and artificially controlled, but I wouldn't call them a scam unless they're actually lying or defrauding the customer in some way.

It depends on how limited the item in question was. If it was produced in large amounts, the chances of it being worthwhile aren't high... but if the quantity was limited, that's different. When few were made, someone who didn't get their hands on it but still wants it will inevitably shell out higher amounts of money if you resell it.

Collecting can be a sickness. Like when people are compelled to buy everything in a certain line just to complete the collection. Even stuff they don't like.
