How many people do you think would actually go out and kill random people if it was legal to do so? If the Purge was real, what portion of the population do you think would turn into murderers?

Probably half of the population. Especially the right wing side.

My problem is that everyone just accepts that it would reduce crime the rest of the time

Seeing how deviant a lot of people are in this country I would expect more sex crimes than murders if everything is legal.

True. I think there would be lots of rape. And also theft.

Not many, as canonically most people just did drugs or have sexy orgies and the government had to hire death squads to bring up the numbers.

Less than you'd think but there are absolutely people who would kill.

While I'm sure a lot of people would go on a killing spree, I feel like there's a huge issue that those movies don't address. There are other crimes one can commit besides murder. Like hacking into a bank.

Probably a very low percentage, murder while being illegal is probably not the only thing keeping people from committing it

Those movies are ass and barely explore the concept.

I doubt half the population would become murderers. Theres a lot more kinds of crimes than that.

The Purge is a movie, and it focuses on cheap thrills to sell it.

The reality would be worse. We would see murders, sure. There would be a vast amount of other crimes as well. Boost in rapes, theft, vandalism, robberies, etc. Not to mentiin the shadybshit politicians and CEOs would try to get away during the purge.

It wouldn't be at all feasible. And there wouldn't be too many ways to prove that the crimes you commit were done during the purge. And people wouldn't let things go the moment the purge is supposed to end.

The premise makes more sense than some of you think.

The actual intent of The Purge is to kill off the poor. Think about it, who's more likely to be forced to participate? Well off people who have the money to take a trip outside the country anytime they like? Or people living paycheck to paycheck?

Works for businesses as well. Big companies like Walmart could just hire some armed guard to protect their stores for the night. Mom and Pops? Either stick around and defend your store from looters, at risk to yourself, or hide and hope you aren't completely fucked the next day. Probably gonna have to spend the entire day cleaning up unless you lucked out and no one robbed you.

Oh and big companies can totally hire people to destroy the stores of their competition. If you can't afford guards....

The second season of the TV show involved a crew spending the year getting prepped for a bank heist on Purge night.

What keeps people from murdering other people is usually the practical inconvenience. You killed someone, great Now someone related to them probably wants to murder you, and no one wants a murderer in the office. Plus, now someone has to deal with the corpse, and that's gross.

Very realistic. Being able to kill, steal and rape anyone without consequence is a wet dream to most people especially for the right wingers. The crime rate would be at an all time high everywhere.

i think it'd be mostly teenage boys and early 20s men that would try to participate but even then only single digit %. i can't imagine most older folk want to go out and kill people. prob just stay home and protect their families.

Im not quite sure what angle they were going with the satire. I guess its something to do with violence in media, and how were all living vicariously through that violence we see, and somehow thats keeping us docile. But that logic is full of holes

I doubt many people would go out with the intent to murder.
But plenty of people might kill while engaging in other crimes that escalate to violence. People generally agree murder is bad. But theft thrives off of economic and social imbalance.
