Coheed & Cambria - Window of the Waking Mind (8:38)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WscFSf_OjHA

The finale to the album of the same name. I would really like to have nominated the last 4 tracks together, since they clearly are meant to go together. But that would have been way over the limit, both time wise and in number of nominations.

This is interesting--and I do mean that literally, in a "I find this nomination intriguing and look forward to hearing it & seeing what happens" way; Bane nominated one of the earlier tracks from that album, Comatose, so it'll be fun to see how those two songs compare against each other.

I'll also say that I have some interest in the band; Number City was a big hit back at my first ranking topic (and critically underrated, even with it getting a pretty good placement). The Dark Sentencer did not fare as well--I didn't think his singing voice fit a Space Prison Warden which made it a bit harder to connect with [though I'll say that it'd get a considerably better score right now; I may add that as a bonus song that I comment on for fun, though I don't have any real revelations about it. I sometimes use different accounts for different emotional states & thoughts and the bleakness of a prison planet is a tad much for Fluttershy.

Also, the song reminds me of "The Deer Hunter | Ring 7 - Industry" for some reason which is likely giving it a boost.])

Aaaanywho (...I really need to get my own verbal tic to acknowledge when I've gone wildly off-topic instead of just using Raetsel's, but that's another story), as a band that had one song that I absolutely love and one song that I want to revisit now that I'm more receptive to it, I'm rather intrigued whenever something else of theirs pops up. The fact that it's two songs from the same album--itself a different album than the two songs from previous rankings--only makes things more intriguing.

[..I likely should have saved all this to be part of the song's actual write-up instead of commenting publicly like this. Eh, I'll just copy & paste this over to the actual write-up, it's fine.]

I'll also copy those extra two songs to make a note to listen to them later. We always take time to listen and give first reactions to whatever else people want to show off, so there's pretty much infinite room for post-topic songs. (I'll also listen to the other three C&C songs you reference at some point, though I am unsure when. I'll do my best to give them a cursory listen & see if the added context helps the nominated song, if I have enough extra time to squeeze them in somewhere..)

Post #200 songs should be on the spreadsheet now.

I'm sure you noticed, Claudio Sanchez has a very unique and recognizable way of singing. But the funny thing is, his speaking voice sounds absolutely nothing like that whatsoever. He speaks in a much lower register. You would never guess they are the same person.

I've been on a huge Ayreon kick recently. Arjen Lucassen writes these rock/metal operas, then gets his friends to perform them. If you ever get the chance, listen to The Human Equation.

I think this album may be a little too on the nose, as it were. After a day of talking to myself and the representations of my feelings, I take a break to try listening to something different... which has someone talking to themself and representations of their feelings.

Like, I not mad at it, but this is feeling like meta commentary on my existence and giving me a headache. I'll finish listening to it some other day because this is bending my mind in ways that... aren't exactly painful, but feels like something that I shouldn't be approaching at this exact moment. It's just weird; it's somehow so incredibly relevant that I'm a bit scared of it, like it might contain some deep personal relevations that I'm not prepared to face. But it's also not even remotely similar, like none of his personifications have animal traits or names related to pop culture

[Fluttershy=My Little Pony

Raetsel=Phi-Brain

Luce=Tecnically short for Luceid from Wild ARMs, though I generally distance myself from the association these days.

...Though this raises further questions about certain aspects that don't seem to have a direct pop culture connection.]

So, part way through the third song and I seem to be more broken than usual. Which is probably good? But weird. And I think I'm just gonna set this album aside for a while.

In lighter topics, I never really thought about his speaking voice. That's pretty neat!

Songs up to post #204 should be on the sheet and, more importantly, all currently posted extra nominations have Initial Scores so I'm fully caught up on that end.

Asuka Sakai | King of Sorrow (2:42)

@TunnelScene
Character: King of Sorrow

to be clear this is an entirely different track from "King of Sorrow's Theme", still obviously a theme for the same character though

Thank you all, I'll try to get those added to the sheet tomorrow. Unimportant stuff came up today and I needed the day off.

On a semi-related note, considering the crackdown on hornyposting, I may need to be a bit careful around posting certain songs. The hits from Fandom keep coming.

Okay, I didn't think of that. The Human Equation is generally what I recommend to people because it has one of the more interesting plots, and doesn't require any knowledge of any of this other operas. His most famous work is Into the Electric Castle, which is also pretty good. My personal favorite is The Source, but that ties heavily into some of his other works, which is why I don't usually recommend it first.

New songs should be on the public sheet. Didn't have time to get any first listens to any of them because some real world stuff came up--nothing bad, just stuff that took up the hour or two I planned on using here. You know how it goes.

With apologies, I wasn't trying to imply that you did. That album just turned out to be a bit more personally resonant than most albums and I wasn't quite prepared for how the story opened. I do look forward to listening to it and will do my best to get some thoughts in either during the main ranking or shortly thereafter, it's just a bit too emotionally intense to just give a casual, relaxing listen to; the type of thing I have to be mentally prepared to face the resulting emotions. Which isn't bad, please don't think I'm complaining about it, it just is what it is.

Ah, thank you. I'll make a note to fix that before the ranking starts--tomorrow will be a bit busy, so it may be bit a bit.

(Also forgive the switching accounts. I'm only logged in as Luce on the tablet I work on, in order to avoid accidentally using the wrong account at VGMC and messing up the spreadsheet.)

Oh, I had noticed the same thing for one of my noms, Chant of Immortality. It could potentially be controversial to be considered a Twilight theme, so I wasnt sure if that was intentional.

That one was definitely an accident since we counted the Celestia & Luna fansong in the same post. I'm not 100% certain what happened with TunnelScene's; there was a point where we were going to remove the character tab from the sheet since we weren't doing anything with the data and no longer cared to enforce the "one song minimum" requirement on nominators, leaving it rather superfluous... which obviously we didn't do, but it's possible that we stopped writing things down on the assumption that we were going to remove the tab/it didn't really matter anyway & then resumed adding them after we forgot we weren't doing that anymore.

Alternatively, March and the first week of April were really stressful and we just missed adding a few of those character notes in our haste to get something finished in case of worst case scenarios that would have required us to scrap the project. It's really hard to guess which.

Either way, the mentioned songs should be properly noted now. I need to go back through and see which others are missing as it's exceedingly unlikely those were the only ones, but as I said, today's a busy day for me so I'll content myself with just getting the known inconsistencies out of the way in the early morning & worry about the others tomorrow-ish.

Okay, I think I added notes to all remaining untagged Character songs. I was still missing three or four, but my numbers are mostly checking out now. I'm not positive since I didn't triple check things, but... well, I fixed any errors that were easy to track down. Even fixed a typo (Nina Williams was somehow tagged as "Nina Williama").

I mostly didn't add tags to character songs that weren't tagged as such by their nominator, but I also did in some places where I knew to do so. Friendship is Witchcraft Twilight is tagged, Groundhog Day song is credited to Phil & Rita (I could list every character with a a line, but that felt too time consuming where the song is mostly theirs), Hazbin Hotel songs are credited to their respective characters. I haven't added notes to the Coheed & Cambria songs; from context, I presume Comatose to be a Vaxis song & "Window of the Waking Mind" would also be Vaxis (unless I wanted to name Vaxis and both of his parents, but then I'd have to look up the parents' names), but I'm not 100% positive and have elected not to at this point in time. (Bane or CJones can correct me if they want something listed there.)

...In retrospect, I should probably add a tag to "Dawn of a Million Souls", "The Magic of Friendship Grows", and "The End of the Rainbow". I'll at least tag those three songs tomorrow.

Pretty sure I tagged everyone, but the Ranking Topic is up. Added character notes to the remaining Pony songs (official and fan made) and tagged "Dawn of a Million Souls". Did not tag the Coheed and Cambria songs as being character songs for reasons discussed earlier. All current nominations have at least preliminary scores--I would have gotten the topic up this morning, but I wanted to get the last few basic scores in before posting the topic.

(Also, obviously, handsomeboy's last song was added to the sheet as well).
