I'm in a similar situation, surrounded by redhats in a conservative Christian town. The gravity of my situation sunk in when I was headed to the local range and stopped to ask a couple guys if i was going the right way. Seemed friendly enough, they asked what I'm shooting and I said "AR, 12g and a couple pistols."
