We were both dorks. We had friends but got a lot of shit. I got so much shit that I admit I have trauma to some degree still but I just dont care about that place anymore. Im in my almost mid 30s and life is a lot better now. Basically everything I hated about my life back then is the opposite now. I have friends, girls like me, Im an adult who can do whatever the fuck I want etc,

My friend tho wants to talk about high school every time we meet up. Telling me about people he has looked up on Facebook and what they are up to. People who pissed him off back then and how he wishes he could hang out with some of our friends from back then again. I try to brush it off by saying yeah that guy was an ass to me, too or oh yeah that was a fun week etc but its getting sad. Literally about 80% of what he wants to talk about is shit from high school. Those bullies probably havent thought about us in years or even remember us and all our old friends we lost contact with are more than likely married and have a family now.

Remember when is the lowest form of conversation. But my college friends and I always go to that well when hanging out in person, but it's generally positive memories. Sounds like he hasn't processed his trauma.

They probably don't even remember him at all... that was 20 years ago

I dunno, if you and your friend's conversations are made up of mostly "remember when"s rather than new things/experiences, it might be a sign the friendship has gotten stale.

I disagree with this take. Maybe its not the most intellectually stimulating conversation but it can still be fun to reminisce about previous experiences.

Conversations about remembering past events, thats life my dude. If you think thats the lowest form of conversation, you must truly hate conversations in general.

They consider high school their best years but no one knew I was going through the most depressing points of my life while they were having a blast. Makes it hard to share that side as I didn't tell them.

This. Plus, C Pain is right about conversations remember when is only ever slightly above discussing the weather when you have nothing else to talk about but arent brave enough to choose silence.

Yeah, there's a line between reminiscing and dwelling on it too much. My best friend will bring up school stuff every now and then like most people, but for me I'd rather forget a lot of it.

There we go. I was mostly saying it as a tongie in cheek reference, especially as I love reminiscing on the past with old friends. But I can agree it does get old, but it's usually that we haven't seen each other in months so it's a natural topic to bring up.

Man, I legit haven't thought about HS since I graduated.

Tough tough tough. The guy peaked in hs, and you're part of it. So that's what he talks about with you. But he does at least seem to value your company. If it really drags on you I suppose you could try to talk about what he's got going on recently. Some dorkly new things.
