In reality, I think he was too old(46) and they wanted an excuse to not hire an older person and not get in trouble for it. No one can say how often it happens because its not a thing people track. I only missed one question on the entrance exam and instead of being impressed with my score and trying to get me to move forward in the process, my interviewer spent the whole interview trying to convince me to apply for the FBI or another federal service. I explained that my family was in Dallas and that I just wanted to be back home after 6 years in the military, and since the FBI would almost assuredly assign me somewhere away from my family, I had no interest in them.
