40 something years worth of systematically dismantling systems and organizations for the sake of Number Goes Up.

Views and clicks? Profit. Spin coverage such to get the most eyes on - this favors outrage topics, even at the most impartial.

Public works and societal support systems, in themselves, do not make money (or enough money, nevermind that it's never enough by design), and are allowed to decay or fall apart completely. This has a secondary effect of fraying the fabric previous generations grew up with - there are no safe 3rd spaces for people to mingle in and mature. All the hangout spots of the 90's are blighted. Social media even at it's best is not a substitute for a real community center or hell the basement of the brick and mortar hobby shop you could walk to (long closed because online shopping is more convenient to Number Goes Up)

On the work side we're the most productive we've ever been, at the cost of a burnt out workforce that no longer has time for a social life or fulfilling activities beyond the day to day. Everyone is too tired to parent. This feeds back into collapsing (underfunded and villainized by outrage media pundits) educational systems - for people that even have children at all - leading to increasing numbers of maladapted and undersupported youth (and, remember, actually making functioning members of society is secondary to wringing larger profits from them with minimal overhead)

But hey the economy, or at least this bar chart of numbers too large to hold meaning, looks good.

TL;Dr: too much emphasis on money. Not enough emphasis on maintaining society. Going to be an interesting couple years
