We were busy making fun of Hogwarts Legacy for getting zero nominations in anything

We all saw that coming a mile away

It's a Bethesda game. If we judged all of them by what they provided on release they would all be solid 5 out of 10 bug ridden disappointments. People aren't going to really get into starfield until the modders turn it into a good game some point in the next year or two.

Like that sounds harsh but it's true. I spent 50 hours with the game and don't regret it at all, but it was kinda a miss.

Loathe though I am to compare with other games, just look at the difference between it and something like Cyberpunk 2077 2.0.

Night and day.

And credit to Bethesda for trying something different but the gameplay was just not it.

Iunno about F4 since I wasn't really gaming around that point in my life

I mean, i enjoyed Starfield and i thought it kinda combined all the Bethesda games together in 1 and was probably Bethesda's best game overall but it still had a ton of flaws and got boring quickly.

The Bethesda formula is just so old and tiring now.

I think Bethesda games are just kinda like the CODs and Ubisoft games. People know what to expect and they're popular but they don't blow people away anymore.

People will still be playing it years from now as it constantly improves with mods and the like so I don't think it overly matters.

The nominations this year suck in general. Nearly every category has Alan Wake 2, Baldur's Gate 3, and Spider-Man 2. At least one of those but usually all three.

I've got some sincere doubts about the quantity of games that were even up for review.

What? Everybody hated oblivion's level scaling out of the gate. Skyrim was more well received but both of them had game breaking bugs at launch. Morrowind wasn't nearly as bad, but now we're talking about Bethesda from 2002, literally more than two decades ago.

Edit: and that's ignoring the fact that Bethesda games have consistently had issues for decades now in certain categories that people just accept at this points. The hideous character models with the dead-eyed stares, using the same engine for so long that in order to make trains work they just made a giant train sized hat for an NPC to wear who runs along the track. The fact that exploits from three games ago are still usable in starfield because they never stopped using bad practices like having vendor bags just below the floor that you can get to because they didn't even bother to push it all the way under.

Revisionist history is pretending like Bethesda would even still be around if it wasn't for the massive mod community that keeps their janky games running for a decade after they are released.

I remember being absolutely sick of the Bethesda formula when Skyrim came out. That was a lot of people's entry for it but at that point I had played a whole bunch in a few years.

Now I like and appreciate them. Nobody else really makes them and they take half a decade to come out.

My uneducated guess is the Bethesda formula was still serviceable at the time and lack of strong competition. Things are different now and the cracks are starting to show.

A lot of people were. Skyrim was a buggy mess at launch but iirc the GECK was released within months so you were getting mods super early.

Starfield probably wont get a creation kit until somewhere in 2024. The community cant fix the game this time.

I was fine with the level scaling in Oblivion. In games like that I hate just being overpowered and just going around wrecking everything in one hit

I put maybe 15 hours into the game and in that 15 hours I experienced the most bland and lifeless sci-fi world I've experienced in media in a long time. Dunno how you make space boring but they managed to do it.

Yeah this. It was still fun, but not GOTY material. There was a lot that they just didn't get right, at all. Maybe if they make a Starfield 2?

Because without mods its not a good game

That is a bit of a shame when it comes to modern AAA games. Their next game is Elder Scrolls. They'll probably wanna go back to Fallout after that.

If you estimate a 5 year development time you're looking at 10-15 years for a potential Starfield 2.

The days of figuring out stuff for a sequel is over unfortunately. It's why so many AAA games are so samey.

i havent gotten terribly far into it yet but a review i read pretty much sums up how i feel about it, saying that its just boring af because it has none of the weird charm of other bethesda games and all the stories are mostly PG

like idk morrowind is weird as fuck
skyrim was fairly tame in comparison, but it had some dark and weird shit too

FF16 is still nominated for best RPG, best narrative, and best soundtrack.

Diablo 4 is a better game than Starfield.

As a Bethesda fan I can tell you it didn't deserve to be nominated. We all joke about the bugs and Todd's lies but starfield made us believe Beth was finally ready to leave it's reputation behind. Microsoft was so sure of it's success it made it an exclusive to the Xbox (and PC). Perhaps once again, the game Hass all it's dlc released and modders fix the mess left behind we'll get a proper space adventure but for now, I'd say the base game isn't even worth checking out.
