Why are there so many variations

Why are there so many different variations of bread?

I am NOT going to make a joke about my testicles.

They do different things

Pokpee is stored in the Pokballs.

But no seriously: Different pokeballs exist because... of the economy!

Pokeballs are baseline, great balls are strictly better than those, and ultra balls are better than those, with "better" meaning "more likely to succeed in catching a pokemon". The only difference is the price, and the look of the ball itself. The Master Ball also exists, with a 100% catch rate, but the difficulty and cost of making them makes it infeasible to actually market. Generally, you only ever get one by helping out some overly wealthy guy.

There is a demand for consistency in pokeball success rates that scales against costs. So instead of just making progressively better pokeballs that get prohibitively more expensive, you get pokeballs that are really good, but only in specific scenarios. Dusk balls are as strong as ultra balls, but cheaper. The catch is that they only work well in the dark, generally at night or in caves. Net balls work great on bugs and water types, Dive balls work for pokemon that live underwater, Nest balls are good for very low level pokemon, Heavy balls are in my pants.

Some are only for promotional purposes, either for aesthetic or to mark an occasion. Some have non-catch effects; Luxury balls are extra cozy and will make your pokemon like you at a faster rate, Heal balls will completely restore the health of any pokemon caught with them.

Never forget folks, as of Legends Arceus it's canon that EVERY pokemon can become pocket size (or smaller) at will, even the ones in the wild.

I'd prefer they kept it simple with the 4 pokeballs tbh. I don't like mismatch pokeballs.

I always try to catch every pokemon with the original pokeball just to keep the lot looking the same.

And people will think you are cool when you trade legendary with them and they see you catching them in a normal pokeball
