Many Western cartoons from the 80s/90s were made in Asian countries. Just look at the Thundercats intro it's anime lol.

someone once asked what's my favorite anime and I answered Batman TAS from the 90s. He had a confused look. I don't get it. "anime" "cartoon" it's all the same regardless where it was made.

Exactly. They're so elitist yet so insecure that their precious style of cartoons just has to be so superior to other animation that it can't be called a "cartoon." Anime fans are ashamed of their favorite shows being cartoons and it's quite sad.

Like, you wouldn't put family guy in the same category as looney toons would you? Most people would say family guy and Rick and Morty are "adult cartoons". In that same sense, anime and cartoons with more realistic art aimed at teens or older kinda also get their own category.

And assuming you're actually being serious, trying to "punch down" at anime fans to look cool on the internet just kinda reaks of "try hard" or "internet alpha" btw.

Theyre still cartoons, yes.

The fact that they arent made for young children doesnt mean that they arent cartoons.

Theres also nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment meant for a younger audience.

Frozen is my favorite anime

It should go without saying but being a Cartoon doesnt automatically mean its meant for children, nor does being a anime by default mean its for adults.

I feel like when the sausage goes in the buns, it goes beyond that definition. Sure, a porno is techinally a film but nobody's gonna pull that one out on movie night.

It would still be a cartoon. Not suitable for children, sure. But its animated, right? So cartoon.

They're cartoons. There's no getting around it. Hence why sub-categories exist.

"Anime are not cartoons" is a perfectly normal statement for kids and teens to say. Everyone goes through that phase growing up. Same way they'll say "it's not a toy, it's an action figure".

Granted the GameFAQs forums demographic is a bunch of 30 year Olds so nobody should be insisting this unironically. We're old enough to know better >_>

Yeah but most of us know little about the pioneers of Japanese animation, and the events and influences that shaped it. The industry took much longer than Hollywood to truly flourish.

They are, and people who say they arent probably dont know enough about western stuff. If an American comics fan thinks manga is too different to be called comics they should say the same about Franco-Belgian comics, that is an entire separate culture as well. Theyre all just comics though.

That's part of their point. The average person around the world doesn't know about the origins of Hollywood either. It's a part of growing up where you eventually recognize that other people actually exist outside of you so the fact that you find something obvious doesn't mean that everyone else knows it.
