I've worked 16, 8, and 6 hour shifts. I feel like 6 is the best of the 3.

Hell no, longer shifts are better cuz you get more time off. Might as well cut the commute and days down with more hours in 1 go. You're already there >_>

I'd rather do four 10 hour days than five 8 hour ones, but I can also get by fine doing four 8 hour days so I'll stick with that for now.

Make them too short and the travel / prep time to actual work time ratio becomes too small.

At one past job I did three 12ish hour days, and had the rest of the week off. That was a pretty neat arrangement.
