If you honestly think Alien is indisputably better than Aliens, you either misunderstood the topic or are one of those assholes who thinks your opinions should be considered objective fact.

I say this as someone who absolutely prefers Alien over Aliens.

Although looking through the topic, it seems like a lot of people misunderstood the topic. TC is looking for franchises where there is a clear consensus that the first one is the best, and people who disagree are outliers.

A lot of people seem to be just expressing that they have a strong opinion about the first one being better, regardless of whether there is much of a consensus about it.

Maybe next theyll try to tell us the Alien was supposed to be intelligent in the first film, unkillable, and blame Cameron for turning them into mindless bugs

Ive seen these tired old arguments trotted out and thoroughly eviscerated like pigs to the slaughter so many times over the years. Ranking AvP over Prometheus, because Prometheus turned out to be a total ripoff of AvP, is much more fun though. Prometheus has one of the most laughably incomplete and inept plots ever, its almost a miracle by design how bad it turned out.

I'm going to restate The Exorcist, because while I love the third film, I don't think there would be many folks who would argue that any other installments in the franchise beat the first.

Hell yeah, Scream 1 + 2 are definitely the best of the bunch, imo. Three is considered the worst, but it's still fun (I'm bias). Four is a decent step up from three but people are still mixed on it overall, still a fun time.
And the two newer movies are fairly well received as well.

I think Jurassic Park is another good entry. I haven't seen anyone make a case for any of the other movies in the series, and the first is basically a classic now.

I will never understand peoples obsession with saying that the first is the best one for anything media related. Like this music artists first album is the always the best, the first season of a tv show is always the best, and what this topic is.

Is it a hipster ego thing? Makes them feel so special for thinking the first release to be the best entry always? Im just pointing it out because its always the universally popular stance to choose on the internet for whatever reason, and its kind of obnoxious to see all the time.

For the first 4 movies, it's an overarching plot surrounding the lead character with new supporting characters (and some recurring ones) every film.
But as of the 5th movie, there are new leads that it follows.

It's objectively Rocky.

Creed is good, but it sorta has the Rocky 2 feeling to it, which is good, but not reaching the heights of 1. Rocky was a movie about a man, and that's what made it special.

The others are fun, but Rocky touches your soul in a way the others can reach.

Edit: There's a reason why Rocky 1 won best picture.

Nah, there are so many people, myself included, who considers the first Creed movie just as good, if not, better than Rocky 1. Such a phenomenal film and a perfect passing-the-torch story that could have easily been fumbled, but Coogler and his crew managed to pull it off beautifully.

I mean, I don't agree with it always, but there's some reason why it happens. The first is typically any series at its freshest. It's when the creatives had the largest, natural spark to create for that, and they really had a passion for this idea. Many times, sequels are mandated, and at that point, even if good, you can tell where they had to go through the motions of it, or it just doesn't snap as well together.

When you first create something, there are so many possibilities, so much energy, so much excitement. Afterwards, you are bound by the limitations you gave yourself from the original source material. It's probably why Shrek 2 doesn't get this treatment, considering 2 went a different route/didn't constrain itself to what "Shrek 1" might have established.

I'll second the Bourne movies. 1st was a surprise hit that hugely influenced the direction of the Bond franchise. 2nd was one of the worst shaky-cam experiences I've ever had in a movie and started off on the wrong foot with the 'kill off the love interest in the sequel' trope. I didn't even bother with the 3rd movie and beyond after that point; the fact that I'm only the second person to mention Bourne is pretty indicative of the franchise becoming overall forgettable due to lackluster sequels.

I thought the common opinion was that Saw 2 > Saw 1. Everyone I know in person who has seen the series talks about Saw 2 being their favorite.

Better traps, acting, and we actually get to see John Cramer in action instead of at the movie's end (in Saw 1).

Also, there were more than 5 movies in the RoboCop franchise? Are we counting TV series?

Personally I'm torn on Saw. I've known people of both opinions on which is better. Even I'm not sure on which is better, but I tend to lean towards 1. Going off the replies here, I assumed it was consensus. You are right about Robocop though. My mistake.

Not sure why Highlander should be included in this over something like Police Academy.

No Highlander movie has ever made significant money.

Highlander
Budget: $19 million
Box Office: $12.8 million

Highlander 2
B: $34m
BO: $15.6m

Highlander 3
B: $26-34m
BO: $36.7m

Highlander Endgame
B: $25m
BO: $15.8m

Highlander: The Source
B: $12m
BO: $213k

vs.

Police Academy
B: $4.5m
BO: $149.8m

Police Academy 2
B: $7.5m
BO: $115m

Police Academy 3
B: $12m
BO: $106.7m

Police Academy 4
B: $17m
BO: $78.6m

Police Academy 5
B: $14m
BO: $54.5m

Police Academy 6
B: $15m
BO: $33.2m

Police Academy 7
B: $10m
BO: $126k

I mean it took 7 movies before one was a commercial failure for Police Academy (and 7 was largely a straight to video release) and unless you think one is better than the first one, I'd say it qualifies.

Pretty much this. As I'm not a fan, I'm unsure if the first is universally favored. It's also a question as to whether we are defining success purely on box office.
