The President has a vastly disproportionate amount of control to ruin the economy compared to the ability to improve it.

Definitely not as much as many Americans seem to think. He can lobby Congress, the Federal Reserve, etc., but he can't unilaterally nationalize an industry or stop the central bank from raising interest rates as a few examples.

Probably for the same reason that most voters are compelled by single issue identity politics, rather than long term economic party policies. America has somehow made politics a celebrity death match, and it's more pall eatable to think that the president is just pushing buttons to tank taxes or raise welfare or whatever.
