Holy SHIT my guys.

Holy Shit. This game does basically everything I want it to do extremely well. Music, artwork, gameplay, it's all on point. Game is fun as fuck and the systems it offers the player to mess around with are pretty damn cool.

If you enjoy breaking the F out of Final Fantasy 8 you can do similar things with this game and its systems. But it also has some insanely strong enemies hidden within it for those who want to look for them.

The definitive version of the best Star Ocean - I love this. I want more new games like this. I want more remakes of old games like this. It has every QOL feature you could ever want in an RPG, good voice work, no random encounters, minimal grinding, and also FUN grinding if you like to just zen out and fight shit.

I can't say enough about it - they really nailed it. Kudos to tri-Ace and Gemdrops, Inc. (the former developed the OG, the latter developed this version).

It's extremely faithful - it has the weird black cat in Lacquer. You can steal Goodie bag from the old man and get an early Sword of Marvels etc. It's just that now all the menus explain all the game mechanics for you, track what you've done, the maps are better, everything is laid out. It's all still there though. Like you will know which skills lead to specialties and super specialties.

Demo is free and it's on like every platform.

Also can you unlock every character regardless of who you start with, or are some still route-specific?

I don't get this part, other than making your party overleved on the first half of the game.

i never played the original. how is the story? i played the demo and liked the gameplay so far mostly (the AI just suicides itself though). the story seems quite generic though

As someone who played through the original multiple times they didn't cut a damn thing, added a bunch of stuff that all makes sense, accessibility, completionist, new challenges. I wish every remake was given this much care

I'm playing the PS5 version myself.

Physical version might be harder to find at the moment. Some places may not get a restock until a couple of weeks.
