I was raised religious and then dropped it so it's still normal for people to be religious to me

If you were raised in an atheist family, what was your initial reaction when you first learned about religions?

I thought How can people actually believe this? I thought that when I was pretty young. In the single digits. Now Im 47 and still think the same thing.

For clarification my extended family is religious. Pretty much my whole family is but growing up it was just me and my dad and we never went to church, never did anything religious, so it wasnt that I was raised Atheist, we simply just didnt participate in anything but at big family gatherings for the Holidays they would like say a blessing before the meal and stuff like that. Everyone would drop their head and close their eyes and say some blessing in unison. I just sat there quietly looking and always thought it was weird.

Thanks bud. I wouldn't know, since I was raised with one religious parent, like the TC.

Well they both were

I strongly encouraged and reinforced my mom's religion when she got sick. Did so for all the old folk I took care of, despite my personal feelings on it

The same way other people believe we were created out of nothing.

I think I was about 12 or 13 years old, when I inadvertently offended a Jewish friend of mine.

my parents were born and raised in east Africa, and had Catholic backgrounds, but besides weddings, my siblings and I basically had no religious education at all (my mom wanted us to be Catholic, but my dad felt we should decide for ourselves).

anyway, so when I'm about 12 or 13, we started reading Night for one of our classes, and since I don't know anything about anything about any religion, I ask my friend sitting next to me if the Star of David was the devil star

he just says "no", and we leave it at that, but from the reading of the book, I learned more about the Holocaust, the persecution of Jewish people, etc...and then a little while later, when he turns 13, I saw him wearing a small necklace with the Star of David.

I never felt so bad about being ignorant about something.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Yeah I don't talk to religious people about my lack of or my thoughts on it unless it's to encourage them. Try not to anyway

Raised in a state where Christianity is (or at least was) the predominant religion, I knew some general religious things, even if my family was not actively participating in religion. I rolled with it. I even read some of a childrens version of the Bible one time. One day, I was told there was conflict between evolution, which I understood and thought was cool af, and Christianity. I decided to reject Christianity. I was also edgy, and as a child, that was an edgy thing to do. I also hate authority figures cannot divorce the God of Abraham from that role.

Holidays were mostly secular affairs. I didnt know the lore behind Christmas and Easter until I was older.

I also thought Jesus on the crucifix was creepy and disliked crosses because of that. That didnt affect my views of religion, just imagery. Buddy Jesus wouldve been a lot more comfortable to see as a child.
