Their employees are still applying for jobs even after they're hired.

You are on your feet all day.

You have to deal with management and the public on a very personal level

You are caught between being bored and underpaid or overworked and stressed out from hour to hour.

Female servers (but some men too) have to put up with harassment more than most entry level positions.

There is little room for promotion or advancement.

Waiting and fast food is just stepping stone for majority of people.

When you become a restaurant regular and you see a young person as a waiter there for more than 2 years, you start to feel sorry for them.

How is it possible that simultaneously the food is TOO damn expensive plus the workers get paid like shit?

Something has to give.

Is the same true for retail?

I was expecting customer turnover rate, not employee.

In many areas yes, but in some no.

In retail, there's rarely a "tip" incentive. You get paid a wage more or less the same whether it's fast or slow. That also takes away some of the ability of the customer to mistreat or be abusive to the retail worker.

In retail, there are opportunities for promotions as well, much more than in waiting. Manager, assistant manager, department head, etc... there may be a head waiter in a larger restaurant, but those positions are fewer.
