Disclaimer: Yes I played the original, yes I played all the RE remakes up to this point, yes I can get good. I just don't enjoy it.

Aiming the guns since RE2R has felt awful on kb/m to me but I charged through because of the small enemy count and the ability to thin out routes strategically. RE4 is a whole different beast. I can't figure out parry timing for my life, I can't seem to find an ability to dodge or create distance (In the original, walking backwards got you out of range. They lunge in this one.) The knife durability is abysmal in the early game and I do so little damage. Funny enough, I got past the village assault relatively unscatched because I remembered the sequence of scripted events to get out and bumrushed it (missing out on a lot of loot, I'm sure) but later on it just gets overwhelming in the enemy count vs my ability to navigate around, control distance and set up spin kicks to knock down multiple enemies. It feels clunky and cumbersome to me.

Well damn, I haven't played the new one yet but played the original on everything, including PC and that was fine.

No, they didn't. It looks and runs beautifully. RE-Engine is black magic. The atmosphere is great and a ton of the charm and appeal is intact for the time I've spent with it. The problem, to me, is the abysmally clunky combat.

I'd kill for the RE3 dodge mechanic. That's literally all I would need to enjoy weaving through crowds and doing my thing.

I wonder if the console version has a different preset than PC. I found the deadzones are rough and sluggish. The slow, yet inaccurate, aiming speed has been really tilting me. I'll check out some posts online (I know I have a bad gaming chair, but a quick google search revealed a lot of people with my same perspective.) to see if I can tune up the controls and keybindings a bit better.

That might be your problem. It was the one I had when I first started playing. In the original, it wasn't a problem to stand in a bunch of enemies.The ganados in the remake are way, way more dangerous. You do not want to be weaving through crowds of them. If you're in the middle of them, they will murder you.

I noticed. They seem to have quite a few moves, and their lunges have shocking range compared to the OG.

This will sound simplistic, but the best advice I can give is just to keep your distance. You can still stagger and melee them, it's still about as effective as the original, but it takes a bit more work to do so.

Parrying is also useful, but I was really bad at remembering it, so I mostly just ran away and then took potshots the whole game.

To set up super sexy fat sweeps that knock down everybody at once. Idk, I played the first much more aggressively because the enemies were insanely more predictable and dorky to fight.

I'll put on my big boy pants and try a crack at it again tomorrow. Try keeping distance, playing it safe, and treating it more like a survival horror than an action horror. See if that helps me out.

I'd still like to know how to properly parry, though. Is it just tapping L1/Spacebar right before their hit connects, or is it holding L1/Spacebar in anticipation and "stabbing" the moment before their hit connects?

Parry right before. The timing is very generous.

IIRC, holding it is a block, but parrying leaves them open to a counter (like Dark Souls if you've ever played). It's kind of hard to see it in the moment, but it flashes in the bottom right corner when the parry timing is right.

I dont rate the remake as highly as others on here tend to, but the controls are very serviceable.

I suck at video games and didn't have this issue.

I have played RE4R countless of times and not a single time I had problem with the controls. Heck, I even did a Knife + Grenades only run on professional with no issues. You can practice perfect timed parries on Hardcore mode.
