I agree with you on biopics about people that are already extremely famous or are still alive today, and think documentaries are better in that regard. However they are good when dealing with lesser known subject matter or people, I think of movies like Schindlers List, Amadeus, Braveheart and Ed Wood. I Probably wouldn't know anything about those people without those films. Of course they all tend to fabricate, but the point is to get people engaged with the subject matter.
