I'm watching Dylan the Night Owl's video on the AVGN, and I'm on the part about the AVGN movie.

Was the AVGN series always just a stepping stone for James to get into filmmaking?

He was a film major in school, and he made films since he was like, a child.

Kind of. Although it's less of a stepping stone and more of a coincidence

He always wanted to make films, has made films since he was a child.

AVGN was a side project that took off. But films always was and still is his passion. He really doesn't play games all that much.

It's not like he made AVGN so he could make a film tho.

From the video, it seems like Mike was the video game guy, who would tell James about the history of the games/consoles featured on the show.

In one of his videos, I think where he re-reviews his first couple videos, he stated that he originally didn't plan to make any more after the Castlevania II video, pointing out how poorly his clothing was, like he just didn't care enough. I'm just going off memory on this info, since I haven't seen that video since he released it.

The real problem is the lack of the supporting originals. Mike was the soul of the channel, Bootsy was cool until they decided not to pay him and he committed the sin of being better at games than Mike, and Kyle Justin doesn't do music anymore or something like that. The new Screenwave guys are/were (are they still there?) creepy and a lot of what they did for the channel didn't work. James is so checked out that this year's Monster Madness is completely lame, and last year's featured plagiarized stuff James was just reading off, complete with a hard to find apology.

The fuck? I hate when Youtube reviewers cram all their friends in. That's why Nostalgic Critic is so bad. Granted, Mike playing the characters in the earlier vids is funny, but I think the nerd is enough on its own. I'll agree that other people writing the videos is poor form.

What's there to get? He always wanted to be a filmmaker, did AVGN as a side thing for money and a little scratch, unexpectedly found success and tried to use that to expand his real passion, and was disappointed when that didn't succeed. He fell into a bit of a rut after that, but he's been producing solid material as of late as he seems to have found a new boost of interest in the character and format.

All those are from games he played in his childhood. Like Dr Jeykll and Mr Hyde and Castlevania.

When he went to Uni to learn about making films, he never really looked back on video games. Everytime he doesn't have childhood memories to look back on, the videos really struggle.

Also a lot of his takes came from Mike. Who really is a big gamer.

I think we have our nostalgia goggles on for his older stuff because we grew up with it. Looking back on it now, it is just not that great. His new videos are unwatchable for me. I watch his videos now and I have to cut them off because I get bored. I never saw the AVGN movie, but I heard it was ok. The series I enjoyed the most had Mike and Bootsy. The Board James series was really good. Just a bunch of dudes hanging out. I could relate because they were like my friends playing games.

I disagree on James' old stuff not holding up

Aside from the crudeness which is personal taste of course. He was ahead of the curb on this. He was making that kind of content before Youtube existed. A whole generation of "Content Creators"were inspired by AVGN or inspired by guys who were inspired by AVGN.

It's kinda silly to go "Man James making fun videos in his basement in the mid 2000s doesn't hold up to 2023 production quality" no shit.

I don't really follow any youtubers and I definitely don't follow any streamers or content creators besides him but I will always have a softspot for AVGN videos from the past.

I was born in 76 so I'm about 4 years older than him and very much a kid of the 80's and in the early days most of his videos were NES games which were very much my childhood and some of his humorous thoughts in the videos on specific games were legitimately exact thoughts I had like landing the plane in Top Gun, a certain step in TMNT, dying in Nina Gaiden and being sent back to 6-1, stuff like that. His power glove video was gold.

I really really laughed at some of his videos and because of strong nostalgia I always will. No matter who came up with the idea of the videos or the story for the scripts it resonated strongly with me and always will.

I actually like some of his modern videos as he isn't going "full nerd" with the over the top anger and antics. It's just some of his thoughts and background information which I enjoy the way he covers it. i'll always be a fan.

it was good stuff but yea it has gone downhill years ago and has been even worse since mike left. he'll still put out a decent episode here and there but it's rare and most are just super forgettable. glory days was when he was doing board james. that seemed to have the most passion behind it.

mike and other people were the ones playing the games and james honestly just sucks at games. not sure how much they've admitted to it but i believe mike or someone has said it. as long as it's making james money he'll keep it going. he made a life for himself doing it and was about to fund a low budget movie doing it.

i think his REALLY old stuff doesnt stand the test of time, but he has a really good streak starting around 2007-8 or so. the dumb skits calm down and he stops doing the chain curse gimmick as much. it kind of reminds me of south park where about three seasons in the show really clicks for the first time

i do think his newer stuff is watchable but its definitely low energy. he doesnt seem to be having fun doing it anymore and i get it, dude is getting old. its just a little sad to watch

The AVGN really was a gamer. It's just by the time the N64 and Playstation he didn't really play games anymore. Guess he was trying to focus on his shitty movie career. If you watch his retrospective of Contra it wasn't a AVGN. But I don't think he faked those memories just a story of a dork trying to wake up and beat it. The game. Before school.

I am kinda drunk too from last night and a Discord. But yea

I remember saying James at a meet and greet, a long time ago, that he doesn't seem to be that angry anymore. He responded with, "I guess I have to make the episodes when I'm in a bad mood. Ha ha." Which honestly probably makes a lot of sense why his angry shouts feels like phoned in anger as oppose to some of his older videos where it either sounds real or is real.

With that said, yeah the new AVGN movie was just hilariously...unfunny. It's not even a so bad it's good, but bad that it is bad. It was really hard to get through, which is a shame because from looking at the behind the scenes it seemed James and others had a really fun time with it.

I don't blame him though, he's happy where he is and to me that's all that matters.

I never knew anything about the movie except that happened and he reviewed ET at the end. Somebody briefly uploaded the first fifteen-twenty five minutes to youtube. Which I thought was going to be the best part maybe a Gamestop meets AVGN and that wasn't funny. I think a lot of the actors and the production were probably good but if if I didn't like the first part of the movie. I doubt it gets any better for me,

But I can still appreciate how his gimmick that he thought was a throwaway thing initially got him to make a Hollywood movie? A movie. He didn't even flash his junk or have any onlyfans heh
