Is Captain Toad *the* Toad? Or are they different characters?

SMB2USA was my first Mario game so it annoys me a lot that they use the soulless blue and yellow instead of the original

They should make a Wario & Waluigi game

Toad and his family were on vacation, trying to visit his hammer brother in Ice Land when they...when they...hit a banana peel and spun right into oncoming traffic! Oh, the humanity! Luggage burning, spores clinging to everything! The contact high over a five-mile radius!

Toad needs his Arabian vest with no undershirt.

Really, Nintendo has simply zero investment in the notion of consistency for the Mario-verse. It's why characters such as "Toad" & Toadsworth just vanish once they're no longer relevant or manage to gain any significant popularity. Until Wonder, Daisy was only relevant as a roster filler in Mario spinoffs, such as Kart, Party, & various sports. Then you have Birdo, who got new relevance as a partner for Yoshi in games like Mario Tennis & MK Double Dash. Toadette may become a long-timer, but I totally see Captain Toad eventually falling off.

Because Mario is coded red, Luigi Green, and Peach is Pink.

That's it. Different colors for each player in multiplayer.

Mario games are fun and colorful games that put play mechanics and whimsy over deep lore and adherence to timelines, and that's exactly how it should be.

If I want deep lore, I'll play an RPG, or adventure, or visual novel, or survival horror, or almost any other genre.

I wish instead of making the Yoshi characters easy mode, you can play as whoever you want with easy mode being a separate toggle.

I agree. It also keeps the games fresh that they introduce new things constantly, and don't make a point out of keeping things static. Odyssey could have easily just played things safe, but Mario not doing that is one of the biggest reasons he not only survived against all the 90's cereal-mascot characters, but long since outlived them.

So many other platforming series have taken the approach of making their sequels pure sequels where it's the same movement and such with new levels and maybe a new character/feature. Mario, for the most part, throws out so much of the artstyle/mechanics/etc. with each new entry unless it is a direct sequel (as in something like SMG2 or 3D World) and completely reworks it from the ground-up. Yet, the quality and overall idea of Mario stays intact so as to not make him feel completely separated from his roots.

SMB2USA was actually a good thing at setting up a precedent that sequels can be more than just glorified romhacks of the original. Sure, lost levels is the true sequel, but when you look at SMB > SMB2USA > SMB3 > SMW > SMW2 > 64 > SMS > SMG > 3DL > Odyssey, you can see the drastic changes this series has from one entry to the next.

Compare that to nearly every other platformer, and they play more like the jump from SMG to SMG2, and while it's fun, obviously people move on quickly. It annoys me when people say all Mario games play the same when the only series for Mario that has been like that is really just NSMB (in which I would argue the og DS NSMB was quite innovative and original for its time compared to previous 2D Mario games and the jump to NSMBWii was pretty big as well. It wasn't until NSMB2 and NSMBU that it started to really feel repetitive).

Pretty sure they are different. They could also just as easily retcon Captain Toad into being the original Toad as well if they wanted to. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Toad's absence is because of Captain Toad. Maybe they think people would get confused with two separate red Toads being distinct characters from the generic Toads.

Did anyone mention SMB2 is a dream? Toad is the best character in that game with their only weakness is a low jump height which is made up for with speed and charge jumps.

This. But adding more characters like Daisy, Yoshi, and Toadette has made the color-coding less distinct.
