To be fair to Paine, Id never gotten far into FFX-2 until late last year, so I didnt really have her backstory at all. But it only did so much to improve my opinion of her. But he has a sort of casualized racism towards the Al Bhed, and he actually has a reason (even if it isn't justified). He's basically the perfect representation of the control Yevon/religion has over people, and how even ostensibly nice people can have deep, deep character flaws. And he also shows how (hopefully), people can change when they experience new things and people. Like, even before Yevon was fully revealed to be a sham, he was willing and able to try changing. The other characters, while they acknowledged it, didn't really call him out about it, and took it into account when necessary. I think that's what I meant by casual.
