I'm getting worried.
First youtube added the pop up threat that stops the video till you X out and hit play again.
Now they added a fucking loading screen circle that makes you wait 5 seconds to hit X.
Apparently they've cracked U Block Origin enough that they can take away our ability to view videos any day now on a whim.

I like it when I go on a site and it pops up with that big "please disable your ad blocker or continue without supporting us" and im like lol ok. If ads weren't so egregious & intrusive at times I'd have no problem just ignoring them, but too many sites have garbage ads with pop-ups, shit that takes over your screen etc.

I didn't use an ad blocker on this site in order to support it until fandom cranked the ads up to 11 with incredibly intrusive full screen ads on mobile. There's a certain level of ads I'll accept, once you go past the threshold? Blocking time.

It's an uphill battle convincing people to pay a subscription cost for something that used to be "free" (read: sells your data and runs on ads), and outside of that there's little other recourse unless it's one of those sites that's being run as a loss-leader for some other, actually-makes-money project (and this 100% getting pared down or destroyed when the time comes to Make Line Go Up)

Did your adblocker block that?
All sites need to do is sell ads directly, and code in simple <a href="//url.tld?ref=the-site-you-are-viewing.tld" target="_blank"><img src="campaign####.jpg" /></a>.
That's all it takes, and the ad revenue will be much higher with asstons of middlemen eliminated.

Expecting a <script> tag to be a magic money button, with no idea what's going on on the other side of that, is why shitty ads are everywhere, which is why adblockers are everywhere.

The best sites can do is react to a "is that a dildo?" ads, and that reaction has to filter down through all the middlemen.

I don't see that there's any need for regulation beyond something like GDPR-style privacy protection, which browsers are increasingly doing on their own anyway. As-is, there's a huge client-side "opt-out" option, that's increasing in participation all the time, which is what this thread is all about.

So long as you're not logged in to youtube, it won't matter. If you obliterate cookies when you close your browser, it'll matter even less.
