He did offer sort of an explanation. He was informed that he's in the prosecutor's shit list so the defense might take note on that and start attacking his credibility when he testifies.

Testifying in a murder isn't optional. He should have been subpoenaed and if he still refused he could have been arrested and forced to testify.
