Here I am STILL wanting to play the game two or three months after spending 120+ hours on it. BOTW just didn't do it for me, but god damn, TotK was something special.

ill get to it one of these days

its just really hard for a game to win me if its gameplay driven as opposed to writing driven

I'm the opposite.

Most video game stories aren't good, and that's because it has to serve an interactive experience. If the story if well developed it often comes at the expense of player agency or choice. If you want to give the player a lot of choice, the story can't be too detailed.

Yeah but not to the degree people are making it out to be. BotW is still unique enough to be preferred.

Gotta say, I'm now feeling...pretty much the exact opposite. BOTW was a milestone 'let the dishes pile up in the sink for a month' event for me, but I'm a little over halfway through TotK at this point and am struggling to keep motivated. I was digging it for awhile, but I've hit a wall where I don't care to explore the regular overworld a second time, and Autobuild + hoverbike has completely trivialized any vertical challenge. And while I was actually invested in finding the memories in BotW, I couldn't be paid to care about the big mystery of Zelda's disappearance this time around, which makes the bad dialogue / voice-acting and repetitive drawn-out cutscenes that much more irritating; Zelda was only interesting as a character when she was an insecure tech-nerd with the weight of her father's expectations on her shoulders, and that aspect has been completely thrown in the bin in TotK.

D, fallout new vegas, disco elysium, and dragon age origins offer a vast amount of player agency and characterization opportunities, at no expense to their phenomenal writing

Mine was the inverse. BotW was such an incredible experience for me. But TotK added a bunch of stuff to the exact same world that I've already been to, and just kind of messes up what I liked about the last game.

I also agree with this. Totk is a great game. And has a ton of quality of life improvements over botw. BUT botw was a huge change up for the series and was super refreshing at the time. Totk is just more of the same.

I have a different opinion, because I vastly prefer classic Zelda games with a length of 35-50 hours. I'm not a fan of both, BotW and TotK. For me, these open worlds are simply too big and not what I seek in Zelda games. It's just a matter of personal preference, I guess.

I'll say this, my friend, who never played BotW, is absolutely having a blast with TotK. I think TotK is a really well made game, but yeah like BotW I was done after 20-25 hours of it. I might get back to it, but there's still other games in my backlog I rather play atm.

You named the exceptions to the rule, and while I haven't played Disco Elysium or New Vegas, I can tell you the story in Dragon Age Origins is good ...for a video game.

I haven't thought about it in the slightest since FF16 came and took it out of my brain. I have no desire to pop back in again. Game has some serious issues, just like BOTW.

I just don't see the appeal in BotW. I'll admit its world is more dark and less gimmicky feeling, but I got bored of it pretty quickly compared to TotK. Vehicles are also fun as hell to use and TotK is a step in the right direction with both dungeons and enemy variety. Also, BotW's final battle has nothing on TotK's.

I somehow had more hours spent in Pokemon Scarlet than I did TotK, despite playing TotK for 6 - 8 hours sometimes and spending 2 months to finish the story. Still absolutely loved it, though. Haven't played it in a couple or so months.
