...have you ever seen an alligator and a crocodile in the same room together? No? Didn't think so.

They might have been at zoo I'd go to as a kid? I remember seeing the sign telling a person how to distinguish them. Idk if they were in the same enclosure or not.

I've never witnessed it personally, but I believe the common exchange "'See ya later, alligator!' 'After a while, crocodile!'" recalls a time when both species were in the same place at the same time, faring each other well upon their parting.
