My last relationship we lived together for nearly seven years and while the breakup was atrocious on my mental and physical health (she got caught cheating, etc etc.) I've been living alone for four years since and it's complete bliss. I'm probably on the asexual spectrum at this point in my life but it truly is great just focusing on yourself. I love being alone 24/7. I can go weeks without texting anybody, and no one hits me up.

I've been alone for 10 years.

That sounds... awful. But I also admittedly have severe anxiety about being alone, so not like I am healthy.

It is worth noting that living with my ex wife was mostly awful, and with ex gf was a Jekyll & Hyde shitshow. Living with my fiance is wonderful though, so it really depends on the person and compatibility

Totally fair. I just can't see myself trusting a romantic interest enough again to live with them, or break down barriers that I already have. I'm on the much older side, so it was kind of my window opening and closing. Was what it was. I don't like hooking up or dating culture, I can't trust people again with a relationship and being alone is awesome. I'd be down for roommates at some point, especially if other people in my industry wanted to save money on rent, but that's the extent of it.

But live alone for too long and it changes you. And not in a good way. You start to lose the connections that humans need. We have always been a social species and need those connections.

Getting a pet for companionship is extremely common. It's weird if you get like 7 cats sure, but many people have a pet or two.

A pet companion is common, and good for your mental health.

Pretending it's your child? Not so much, I should think.

In America at least, treating your pet like a family member is also common to the point where I'm an outlier in that regard. I treat animals as you know, animals. You have to respect that boundary and ensure the animal is comfortable. Putting silly hats on it isn't strictly neccesary.

Addressed in post 30 but I was exaggerating. Either that or Americans are weird because there are definitely too many people that treat their pets like they gave birth to it. I don't take it that far personally, but I'm not going to suggest it's wrong to do so. I mean maybe it is but I'm not an animal expert.

I've seen people kiss their dogs full on the mouth while referring to themselves as the animal's 'mummy'. Which is all kinds of strange.
