E.g. you're a white guy from the 'burbs and you learned mandarin, or you're a dutch guy that learned arabic, chinese guy that learned french or whatever.

I'm curious about doing this but wonder how feasible it is.

My sister in law learned Spanish and Portuguese from classes in high school and college which I found pretty cool. And during college she eventually did a study abroad trip to brazil.

She's pretty much fluent in both.

I have tried and I've pretty much failed at it. I can read it decently, but absolutely fail at understanding it when spoken

Always seemed like joining some kind of speaking group would be the best way to force yourself to practice

What do you mean by culture? The OP makes it sound like a race thing

Assuming he means a language that isnt around you in every day life.

Im white and only speak English but there are a TON of Spanish speakers in my city and group of friends so id consider Spanish in my culture and a language I could learn through exposure more easily than randomly learning Arabic where there is zero exposure so its 100% on me and my dedication.
