Pretty much my entire life I've dabbled in tons of genres and franchises. I haven't played everything and I still have my preferences, but a genre isn't really a deal breaker to me (except maybe horror, I like more shooty horror though, if that counts)

By contrast, it feels like you can't really go a day in the gaming sphere without hearing about how someone loathes so and so style, or actively avoids so and so genre. Even console wars where people insist that Console A with a great library sucks because Console B with another great library is better.

Is this just a mental thing (confirmation bias? Some other bias?), or is it common to have really polarised preferences, and I'm weird?

I'm envious of that and wish I enjoyed more games.

I can play pretty much everything too. I do have preferences but my library's full of everything from FPS to RTS to point and click games

I have preferences, but I do enjoy a wide variety of genres. Even genre's I generally dislike (like platformers) I sometimes find a gem that clicks.

Epic's free games have been great for this.

Yeah, I'm like you, I can play pretty much anything. Rather than a style or a genre though, I do prefer more complex and intricate games to simpler ones.

I'm the same. The only things I currently avoid on principle are gacha/mmorpgs/mobas/subscription based games but I've played some of those in the past too.
