Funnily enough, it wasn't until the finale of Trails From Zero that it finally clicked how the Quartz system works.

I've spent five games just assigning gems at random

I know how the Quartz system works but I don't put any thought into creating combinations anyway

I just put a Petrify Quartz on a character with a big AoE craft and call it a day

The correct way to play is to pay for all the DLC items that break the combat.

best first game? they are all good so that is tough for me but i will go with sky since the first time i played it on psp i was so blown away but they are all excellent

You don't really need the gameplay DLC when the games have easy modes, haha.

I'm in the finale of Zero, so I guess I'll say...

Zero > Cold Steel > Sky

Sky's first half is SO SLOW. The game doesn't pick up until the climax of the second chapter. Cold Steel has better gameplay and pacing, but its story still meanders around too much, considering the final boss has barely anything to do with the main plot. Then, the game ends just as things are picking up.

Here's hoping Azure keeps up the quality.

while zero was amazing azure is better in every way imo. i am a big fan of every game in the series tbf but sky third is probably my least favorite while cold steel 3 is my favorite but azure is right up there with it
