Because then people will go out and buy a ton and hoard them.

Whereas the main reason something gains value, is because either 1. few of them were made to begin with or 2. few of them survived, because nobody cared to save them back when they were new.

Yeap. Only way collectibles can appreciate in today's world is through artificial scarcity like Magic did with the Lotr the one ring card.

They started using that word when they noticed the collector market booming for vintage memorabilia.

It then crashed multiple markets, including the comic book market in the 90s.

If all the available things are bought up and hoarded, surely that will drive the value up due to scarcity?

Only if the people hoarding them aren't also putting them onto the market.

Once people see others selling them above what they paid, they will follow suit to cash out. At which point it will become apparent that the scarcity isn't actually real, driving the value back down towards the original price.

It makes me so mad there's an artificial limit of some products. Creating a bullshit scarcity so people who want to pay a fair price for the item can't, and the bottom feeding scalpers thrive.
