Before my wife passed we always hosted our best friends. Made it easier so my wife didn't have to travel and we could account for potential allergens and stuff like that. We also liked to host and we took some pride in it? I never thought that we went out of our way to make our place spotless or anything like that (we didn't wash the walls or anything like that for them to come over), but I've been heading over there to watch some shows and whatnot since my wife passed and like... their place is gross.

Candy and food everywhere, garbage kinda all over the place, bathroom definitely hadn't been cleaned up for awhile, etc. etc.

These friends are basically like family to me. Do I even broach the subject? It's not like I'm gonna avoid heading over there, I don't have concerns about pests or bugs or rodents... but it did make me kinda just feel yucky. XD

No reason to bring it up in any serious manner. If they've been to your house before, then they know there's a stark cleanliness difference between your home and theirs. They probably just don't care.

I had friends that were the same way. My wife and I would go over their house and there were just random bits of trash and whatnot on their floor. They never swept and they didn't care to do so. I just made it a point to keep my shoes on when I visited.

Sounds like this is normal behavior for them so they arent likely to change and bringing it up when you dont live there is relatively pointless

Just going to have to suck that stink up

Best case for bringing it up is give them shit about it jokingly.

So this is a couple?

I had a single friend like this a few years ago, and I broached it by saying, "what if you are on a date and she wants to come back here? This is fucking disgusting."

i would start cleaning their spot a little and see if that sends a message. i have no problem straightening some shit up. or if they complain about certain things, say they're struggling romantically, i'd def bring up you can't bring somebody over to a place looking like this.

but if they're 100% content and don't gaf about anything, i'll just stay quiet.

yeah i have friends like this and it's a fucking travesty. there are a lot of seemingly well-done-up grownass adults that live like absolute slobs.

NO.

They know they're messy. You """broaching""" (read: confronting/complaining) will do nothing good, but will certainly do something bad.

Yeah, do this. Just love your friends and let them be if they're not endangering themselves or others with the way they live.

yea just don't. if anything it could possibly cause a friendship if they take offense to it. you could invite them over to your place too. like at least alternate it so you don't have to go there as much.

the ONLY reason to bring it up is if you have reason to believe that their lack of homekeeping is a result of depression.
