  • The car dealership. I would love nothing more than to be able to buy a car like I buy literally anything else in life - i.e. I pick the thing I want and pay the money it costs, instead of having a weird negotiation with a man who earns a 6 figure salary by showing me what the car is
  • The car insurance industry. Fuck i hate car insurance. SO much. I hate that I need to change providers every year or get ripped off. I hate that any arbitrary tickboxes on my application about my occupation or star sign or whatever will add $200 to my yearly bill. I hate that I can't get genuine human customer service for anything but as soon as I want to quit suddenly the only way to deal with that is to talk to the same sort of sleazy prick as the guy who sold me the fucking car.

And thats not even talking about how annoying the ads are on their own.

Not me, I love buying a car. I'm a sucker for anywhere they give you free coffee and biscuits while they try to sell you stuff.

This 100% though. And extend it to all forms of insurance. I hate having to sit down every year and spend an evening of my life on Compare The Fucking Market, just so I can save 8.50 on my home insurance.

Feel like it should be government ran, same for utilities. We shouldn't have for profit healthcare, insurance, or utilities imo. I'm also iffy on for profit resources like gas.

Key word: industries.

So I'd like every form of entertainment industry to be ground to dust.

Things like music, art, sports, gaming weren't supposed to make people millions of money.
It's supposed to be something you're interested in and do because you love it.
Instead, everything turned to the race to the top about who's going to earn the most money and the quality of most products has dropped in favor of profits. Not to mention how it's been taken away from average followers.

Just think about the costs of going to a concert or top level sports event these days.
Not to mention how a lot of those more or less idols are completely out of touch with reality, but still influence people around the world.
No, someone who's a good singer or good with the ball shouldn't be able to influence millions.

Hot take, I know.
Give small pleasures in life back to the people.

Things like music and art cost money. They used to be the preserve of the wealthy, via systems of patronage.

The time when they were done purely for the love of it never existed. Somehow, someone has to pay the piper. The alternative would be making them the hobbies of the idle rich.

We owe many of our greatest artworks to the determination of their creators to get paid.

I absolutely disagree with this. Shakespear charged for his plays, DaVinci charged for his services. Socrates lived a bountiful life.

Point is, for centuries and millenia wealth has been tied to arts and entertainment. Acting like its something new or just in the last 100 years is kinda silly.

People did what they were talented at, sports, entertainment, art, smithing, building, sculpting and so on.

Insurance, Utility, and Education "industries" right along with Housing.

None of these should have ever been privatized. And the wealthy continue to prove their irresponsibility at being the stewards of any of these four sectors. I would argue the transportation industry too, especially airports, but eh.

But reducing the pay of athletes wouldn't somehow increase the pay of teachers and other workers though.
I agree that I'd like to see better pay for many other industries but... It doesn't really connect with how athletes get paid though.

If you want to increase taxes (especially on sport team owners, who make actual ridiculous money), I'd be down with that. But I have no issue with athletes being paid highly.

Why not? They have a very marketable skill.

Should the billions they generate go to the wealthy owners?

Of course they have a marketable skill. My point is that society way overvalues it. It shouldnt be marketable.

And as said, the team owners are even worse, so the billions obviously shouldnt go to them. Like with everything else, the money is there, it just doesnt get allocated properly or fairly.

Of course theres no point in saying any of this. The world is well and truly irreversibly fucked and given the state of my life at the moment Im more than happy to welcome climate change. Just as long as I get to live out the last few years of my life with adequate alcohol and comfort.

My bad, should've wrote that I don't think entertainers shouldn't get paid for all.
I just hate everything got industrialized.

Athletes or musicians shouldn't get paid more than doctors, engineers etc. People who make our society function. I'm not saying that an artist should be flipping burgers in order to survive.

But industry turns a lot of artists into money making machines that get lost on the way.

See, the reason concert tickets are so expensive is because people stopped paying for music, and now they have to charge a lot to make a little.

Not paying artists is dumb. Do you know how much time it takes to write a book, make an album, etc?

They deserve money for a product you think you deserve for free. In fact, go a week without consuming any form of art or entertainment. Like you said, you can always make your own instead of relying on others to do it for you.

Edit: You sniped me with your rebuttal. That is a fair take.

It didn't use to be marketable. In the 50s and 60s footballers (who were predominantly working class) were treated the same and paid the same as working class tradesman. It took a lot of unionization and agitation for them to receive their share of the wealth they created.

Football is one of those rare cases where the owners struggle to turn a profit while the workers get wealthy.

And as said, the team owners are even worse, so the billions obviously shouldnt go to them. Like with everything else, the money is there, it just doesnt get allocated properly or fairly.

To be honest, for all its ridiculousness, sport is one of those things that makes life just a little bit nicer for me.

I have one family member (nearly 70) and two cats. Ive already decided the upper limit of my lifespan will coincide with the mothers death. Ill have nothing left after that.

So Im probably looking at another 20-25 years tops. I should be spared the brunt of climate change in that case, and living past 70 is more trouble than its worth anyway. My body already hurts when I wake up in the morning. Cant imagine what its like at that age.

In the meantime alcohol gets me by.
