What is FakeAccount300's Self-Absorbed Game Club 2023?

FakeAccount300's Self-Absorbed Game Club 2023 is a completely biased project introduced in a similar manner to the other Game of the Month Clubs but actually a lot different. It's actually just a topic where I list the game I'm currently playing and award myself a point for finishing it. However, you're all free to also play the game I am if you feel like and also get a point.

The Basics

- I'll choose a game and play it until I finish or get bored of it.
- For each of the games I beat I get a cool point on my extra pointless just-for-fun standings. Every game anyone else beats can get them one as well if they really feel like going along with a topic this self-absorbed and playing what I chose.

- Any game I've selected in this topic can be beaten at any time for a point, no rush except the end of the year. And if the year ends and I'm mid game I'll add it to the next topic too so really, it's pretty easy to get a point.

- Yeah this is really just a topic to encourage me to finish some games, but I'll track any games you beat if you ever feel like playing one.

- New game to play added whenever I feel like it.

Yeah this is sort of a gag intro but I will count up beaten games for anyone here if they play the games.

Currently I'm playing Flea! Its available on the NES, Dreamcast, Steam on PC or the Indie Heroes 1 Collection on Evercade.

Doodle World beaten

Quick game with just four or five short worlds, a pretty easy and straightforward platformer. My initial impressions were favorable, the art that made the stages all look like doodles on a three ring binder page with lines was quite nice, and all the enemies were art supplies like pencils, thumb tacks, markers etc. At first the designs of thumb tack guys for example, to show you can't jump on their heads like spinies in Mario was a useful visual, but as the game went on it was less clear. You can jump on the scissors because they walk point down, and the dry erase marker foes drawing ends looked odd so I was unsure, but yeah you can jump on them. That was more trial and error than I liked.

You run jump and sometimes jump on enemies heads to make it to the end of a level and fight a boss; which is a big guy whose head you need to jump on three or four times. You can collect 100 little pencils for an extra life and jump into a sheet of notebook paper for a bonus screen where you can collect a lot of pencils if you don't fall into a pit (which takes you back). You can also collect a glowing piece of paper that's the equivalent of the Mario invincible star and run through everything while a special tune plays.. but this one "power" is actually a source of one of my biggest complaints. There is no real clear sign like Mario's flickering of when the invincibility wears off; the song ends too fast and you at most flicker once so fast you barely see it; hitting an enemy and dying because I wasn't aware it had run out caused me to die more than anything else in this game. Since there are no powerups, it's one hit deaths the whole game. That said, it's usually not so hard so you can jump and such at will, which is fun and all but the biggest issue is that by the end of the first stage you've basically seen everything the game has to offer.

The backgrounds change, and the enemies change, but they all have the same behavior, just walking back and forth or off ledges. It's just about if you can jump on them or not. And the platforms are all very basic jumping across ledges; there are no special platforms or even particularly clever placement until the final area that adds a bit more challenge and bullet bill like pencil sharpeners that fire pencils at you (helpfully differently looking than the ones you collect fortunately). There are no powerups of any kind, no twists. You don't even really need to run and jump until the final level and underusing the basic functions of the game makes the game an even lighter dish.

The fact the last level has basically no secret areas or nearly as many collectible pencils along with a final boss that's not much harder than the others but has to be jumped on around 15 to 20 times just screams of a game that's padding out its short run time with unwarranted challenge at the end; and when your lives hit zero there are no continues, it's back to the start.

Seeing as I got it with a bundle of indie games (and it is an indie mind) I'm going to be more generous to it; it was a fun enough way to kill an hour or so, but it's a bit too hard for small children by the end and too simple for real platformer enthusiasts. I wouldn't recommend picking it up for too much, but the controls work well enough that if it was cheap or in some kind of bundle you can still do worse.

Shame, the first impression was VERY favorable as the art is quite nice and clever.

New game: Kubo 3

From the same Evercade cart. Quest Arrest was a bit iffy so I'm paying that for the moment. Kubo 3 was also a bit iffy, but it's a cute game made by a kid that was a quick play. Tbh it was more clever than Doodle World gameplay wise despite being a pretty basic platformer with cutesy kid graphics. Though the overworld and hearts and dungeons made it a bit "Zelda lite". Extremely light, just one item to find.

But it being light, short and not too hard made it fun. Also best played on a multi cart imo.

This one may take a while, I'm 3 hours in.

Just haven't been able to game as much as I'd like, but still playing Blue Dragon. Recently got Piko Collection 3 for the Evercade and am kind of tempted to start one of those games.. which would be very distracting.
