Part of the NIH. If you are a US citizen, a very small sliver of your taxes fund this institute, funding researchers on the NIH campus and at universities around the nation. Funding that goes towards both basic research to understand the brain/mind, but also towards clinical research of brain disease and mental disorders.

I don't like that even today the mission statement talks about "prevention, recovery, and cure." That's not the right way to be viewing neurodiversity.

Not that institute doesn't do any good, but there are issues. And there's some pretty grotesque history of mental health treatment in this country.

Even though you havent been diagnosed as mentally ill you still suffer from the stigma that you dont deserve a higher quality of life.

I would concede that it could be the approach for certain specific diseases, and on a case by case basis it could be the right avenue. But it absolutely should not be the default approach to mental heath in general, and it hurts progress to promote it as a driving force.

But you're right, we won't get anywhere discussing it here.
