Teachers and students shouldn't be friends.

There a lot to be said for keeping some formality in place for the sake of a bit of distance.

I think its more that being friends is secondary to the more important dynamic of being a teacher and student.

Back in the UK it was Mr (surname).

Here the kids call me Mr (first name).

Took a bit of getting used to but its fine.

In primary & high school it was Mr/Mrs/Ms

In college it was first names

In work you say the latter of those first 2 examples

In school it was normally Mr/Ms lastname. In college it was either Professor or Doctor lastname.

One of my chem professors was pretty laid back. Was ok with people calling him by his initials or just his last name. Never first name though.

Other one was much more formal. She had a student call her by just her last name. Said I didn't go to school for 8 years to not have my title be acknowledged by some undergrad student.
