I'd want to end it, but absurdly. Like a 3 hour political thriller, and in the last 2 minutes they stumble on a T-Rex that eats everyone and then it ends.

Whatever invites the most flame wars.

The heroes are hounded relentlessly by foes, who come from all backgrounds and motivations all unified by a prophecy that says the heroes would destroy everything. The prophecy was known as "The End of Everything"

It was an ancient prophecy written in a thick volume a thousand years ago. Through many difficulties, the heroes overcome the villains and finally in the end manage to kill the villain in possession of the book of the prophecy "The End of Everything"

Curious to know for what they had been subjected to countless dangers and strife, they begin reading the book to find an extremely detailed account of everything they had ever done. All their battles and victories and defeats. All the way up until the present moment.

The book then describes them reading the book itself, and turning to the final page, which they do, and it simply says The End.

The movie Remember Me is apparently a romantic drama that suddenly ends with the lead being killed in the 9/11 attack.

Everybody dies right after referencing the movie title.

A couple people recapping the last act of the film and being very confused so the audience feels smart. You can probably guess which film(s) did this.

Ambiguous is my favourite. There's a Korean film called Memoir of a Murderer (Director's Cut) which does that incredibly well.

Complete the story, but leave a few details open to get people talking and creating their own theories, eventually starting little cults supporting one theory or another, fighting each other for supremacy, and the winner is invited to my house. I serve them dinner and we have polite conversation about my movie to which they inevitably ask me how the open story lines end, and I'll of course reply that I "couldn't think of anything so I just left it open". I then proceed to get stabbed to death with a fork.

The villain looks at the hero and says yep that would have worked. You would have stopped me.

Which is why ten minutes ago I released the virus that kills all men taller than 57

It was a jokey reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail's ending. It has elements of ambiguous, cliffhanger, and abrupt, but doesn't definitively fall into any of them imo. Though now that I think about it, one of my film studies professors did make a point that good satire always ends badly - you either drift into non-satire and go with a more heroic yet formulaic ending (as the movie in question baits you into thinking), or you stay full-bore down the path of satire and end the movie on a conceptually-humorous yet ultimately weird and unsatisfying note.

I realize I'm probably going to have to turn in my movie-buff card for admitting this, but while I appreciate Airplane! from a more objective stance, it was never one of my favorite comedies, and I haven't seen it in its entirely for a really long time. But doesn't it still end with him landing the plane successfully and saving the day? Even if it's done in a humorous way, that still kind of falls into the trap of drifting into a 'traditional' ending.

I think Blazing Saddles is probably the exemplar of a satirical comedy having a good ending that remains satirical / deconstructionist. And even then your average moviegoer would probably be left scratching their head over it (especially if the general response to She-Hulk's ending is any indication, considering how similar - albeit less refined - it is).

Stop mid-sentence in a throwaway scene, roll credits.

Abrupt, but a little less, uh, abrupt. Tell the story, leave a few loose ends, but don't short change the viewer. Yes, Martina from scene 32 might not have closure, and Edward from scene 6 was forgotten and left a nice opening... but that's the point. You have a narrative, tell it, do it, enjoy it, and if you did it well, people will talk about it forever. Otherwise you'll end up on the dark corners of the internet where people confirm you were racist.

It was all a dream thought up by an NPC from the hit Encarta '97 game Mindmaze.
